    The sad part about this is, read almost any early 1900’s paper and you will see similar stories about all kinds of awful things that happen to people who take … insert unkind substance to puritanical thinking here …

    Watch as the laws get passed they start talking about the “seedy drug dealer” who has replaced the “upstanding pharmacist” becasue of the law, and then, the editor asks for tougher laws against the drug dealers. Even then, the zealots couldn’t see the forest for the trees.

      I might be inclined to excuse ignorance. But to fail to use native intelligence?

      It’s too convenient to excuse what happened back then as a kind of societal naivete. But even then there were voices that spoke out against those laws, and for the exact reason they deserved to be criticized.

      Then, as today, those voices of reason were drowned out by the bellowing of racist bigots, the ravings of deluded preachers and unctuous, officious, BS’ing bureaucrats in cahoots with crooked industrialists.

      Only when it becomes clear to the dimmest bulb in society’s box that the experiment has not only failed but failed badly, with blood on the pavement and corruption at the highest levels, that those voices are ever listened to. Then we fix the problem…that never should have had to be fixed because we never had a problem to begin with.

      We Americans are exactly as Churchill described us:

      “You can always count on Americans to do the right thing – after they’ve tried everything else.”

      In this case, the ‘right thing’ was not to do ANYTHING. Not to have prohibition of any psychoactive substance, regardless of any high-sounding rationalizations.

      Professor Whitebread’s US always forget that the THEM are us, and after the smoke clears, and people dig out from the rubble of a failed social policy, the US looks in the mirror and sees THEM. But always only after Pandora’s box is forcibly blasted open by idiots…

          My apologies, as well. The intent wasn’t to be critical of you, but to illustrate a point.

          Look around this ‘place’. The people you usually ‘see’ here are, IMHO, on the far right of the intelligence bell curve. They didn’t have to cut themselves to know that knives are sharp…especially when they are able to learn from fools who have yet to inculcate that lesson, despite their own hands being lacerated again and again. It’s that latter group that I despair of.

          Almost invariably, such people seek out positions of power so that, in a perverse twist on the Peter Principle, they can rise to a level where their zealotry, ignorance and downright stupidity affect the greatest number of people possible, spreading misery everywhere, ‘for our own good’, of course.

          “If it ain’t broke, don’t ‘fix’ it!” I contend that for the first 138 years of the Republic, it wasn’t broke. Certainly not perfect, but not broke. But prohibs regardless of era simply just wouldn’t listen to reason, thought something needed ‘fixing’, and dynamited Pandora’s Box. And they bear full responsibility for the screamingly obvious course of action that has followed every attempt through history to ban a psychotropic, even one as weak as caffeine.

          Santayana was right; we’ve been doomed to repeat history because of the American tendency to discount history’s lessons. Eventually, though, the ones who were the voices in the wilderness warning against ideological (and spiritual!) hubris, were the ones that were finally listened to…usually long past the point where the hubris leads to a fall.

        I have heard of certain fertilizers contaminating the pot. Dylan was said to have gotten sick from bat guano he used. Either from not wearing gloves gardening or from inhaling the spores. Never heard of it in the smoke. Rare. Never had it happen to me.

    No country,kingdom or regime in history has made a prohibition law work,,from the Russian Peter the Great’s prohibiting coffee when he discovered that he couldn’t start his day without it,till our own drug prohibition.

    Every country that ever enacted a prohibition has recalled it after spending large sums of money trying to enforce it and failing or it was replaced by the new government that took over after the idiots that enacted it were removed.

    It may be the latter for our country. So sad.

      I was a work at home dad for the first two years of my kids’ lives and changed thousands (millions?) of diapers.         Can somebody remind Gil that the human race decided at Nuremburg in the late 1940s that following orders and/or the law doesn’t make those actions right? No I’m not trying to say that fibbing about recreational pot rises to the level of a crime against humanity. The lies about medicinal cannabis most certainly do. If it turns out that cannabis holds the cure for cancer those people will have outdone Messrs Stalin, Hitler, and Caligula by stonewalling the scientific investigation of cannabis for a few decades.

    Elsewhere on the whitehouse.gov site there’s a lot of references to obama’s jobs bill. While destroying jobs in the medical cannabis industry, he is in fact creating lots of jobs for cartels, big pharma, alcohol manufacturers and the various industries associated with prohibition such as private prisons and law. No doubt for the government bean counters this equals success.
