NIDA has a National Drug Facts Week (this year it’s October 31-November 6), where they supposedly “encourage teens to get factual answers from scientific experts about drugs and drug abuse.” Except they don’t, really. They lead teens through highly selective propaganda to learn only those facts that fit the goals of NIDA. Their site is here.
The problem is, of course, that selective and biased facts are as bad as no facts.
Well, now there is an alternative.
The new and improved National Drug Facts Week at DrugFactsWeek.com – for the real facts.
Let me know if there’s anything you think I should add to the Drug Facts Week page. I expect to expand it as time permits.
And feel free to link to it. Let’s get the Google rankings up for this page – maybe we can top NIDA’s.
(The key is to use the words “Drug Facts Week” or “National Drug Facts Week” as the link text, or next to the url if tweeted.)
typo: “NIDA’s first priority is to push a specific message, **ragardless** of the facts.”

The motto of the Know Nothing prohibitionist is “never let the facts get in the way of disseminating an effective piece of disseminating an effective piece of hysterical rhetoric” and they sure do stick to it faithfully. So what’s next, Jack Webb clocking Harry Morgan in the head with a blackjack?

That was annoying. The editing software got hung up and I couldn’t edit my post above.
Thanks, Matthew!
Sweet! Do they just not think about registering domain names for the programs that they run?
Sometimes they watch out for that, but I’ve caught them off-guard a couple of times. Probably the most successful was the Vigil for Lost Promise (note the Google ranking) that forced the DEA to change their event to the National Parent Vigil.
another typo: left out the d in sides under “drug war facts”
What about adding the Nutt et. al harm image to the front page to visually show the truth..

Perhaps because those rankings are a pile of bullshit? GHB, ketamine, steroids, mephedrone, and buprenorphine and benzodiazepines are less dangerous than cannabis? Get the fuck out of town with that bullcrap.
Even more shocking they actually got LSD and magic mushrooms ranked correctly more or less though there’s no question in my mind that ‘shrooms should be ranked above LSD.
Butane? Butane?? WTF???
I’ve never heard about anyone getting high using butane unless you count when people use it to make BHO. (that’s butane honey oil, not Barack Hussein Obama) If that’s the case it should be ranked much higher.
I know I’ve shared on this forum about the homeless man that exclusively sniffed 93 octane fuel as his “drug of choice” He sported the most appropriate nick name, “Hi-test” but the poor man did die from benzene poisoning.
I even knew a couple of guys that would go into people’s back yards and huff the freon from residents air conditioners. If that particular cohort didn’t use something I thought that meant that the substance just would not get you high. To the best of my knowledge they never used butane.
I’ve run into people who didn’t realize that they had a ring of spray paint framing their mouth. I’m sure everybody here has almost certainly huffed a couple of hundred balloons of N2O in the parking lot before a Grateful Dead recital. But for the life of me I can’t recall anyone mentioning that butane would get you high. Just to make it a little more unbelievable Bic lighters have been ubiquitous as standard equipment among the people I’ve interacted with for over 3 decades. Oh well.
Duncan.. I never actually noticed Butane in that one! Seems strange – did the economist re-print it wrong (the original article is behind a Lancet paywall)?
That one was actually Nutt’s second take on drug harms in graph form which included harm to society – I think the key thing was that Alcohol came out on top.
His first, again, not perfect http://www.drugequality.org/images/mean_harm.gif . I wasn’t trying to say that LSD is more or less harmful than khat etc, but more that the ‘common’ drugs, Alcohol and Tobacco are significantly more harmful than people realise – in comparison to the ‘scary’ ones such as crack and heroin and are right up there in terms of harm, which I think would surprise a lot of know-nothings and therefore could have use on such a site as Petes ‘adjusted’ drugs fact website..?

Ah, laughing on Pete’s couch once again… Thanks Quax.
what really pisses me off about the drug war is the narks are paid at least $100,000 per year to lie to the people, steal from the poor, and assault the innocent.
imagine a week where the leaders of our great land couldn’t lie even if they wanted to. governmant agencies would have to answer questions truthfully when asked. a week when it is illegal for a cop to lie. i guess we’ll have to settle for weeding out the lies every day. i have to go do some weeding.
Ah, laughing on Pete’s couch once again… Thanks guys.
