Over at the Drug Czar’s “blog,” the ONDCP has their own additional take on the State of the Union address.
Drug use affects millions of Americans and their families. Drug use and its consequences strain our economy, our healthcare and criminal justice systems, and harm the well-being of young people, service members and our Nation’s veterans. As we work together to address our Nation’s shared challenges, the health, well-being and stability of our citizens will be the basis for strengthening our economy and our country overall. A healthy and productive workforce will foster competitiveness and innovation within our neighborhoods, towns and communities. Prevention and treatment for substance abuse disorders, including drugs and alcohol, will ensure that our fellow citizens can contribute to our shared successes, and that America’s future generations will continue to lead the world in innovation and ingenuity.
It’s got some poetry, but it’s not quite in tune, so I thought I’d take a stab at it…
The drug war affects millions of Americans and their families. The drug war and its consequences strain our economy, our healthcare and criminal justice systems, cause worldwide violence and corruption, and harm the well-being of young people and our Nation’s veterans. As we work together to address our Nation’s shared challenges, the health, well-being and stability of our citizens will be the basis for strengthening our economy and our country overall. However, that cannot happen as long as we declare war on our own people, fill our prisons to capacity, and turn the safety and distribution of certain drugs over to criminal networks. Ending the drug war, restoring personal liberty, and providing help for those who need it will ensure that our fellow citizens can contribute to our shared successes, and that America’s future generations will continue to lead the world in innovation and ingenuity.

Hmmmm. No mention of middle-aged or older folks who had other opportunities when graduating high school than to join the military. I wonder what percentage of the population just got excluded from his version of utopia?
No offense to veterans intended, but I bet you’d wonder if he specifically excluded you.
I assume the specific mention of young people and veterans was simply an intentional effort to hit the maternal and patriotic heartstrings.
Yeah, like when we are so concerned about our combat veterans that we stuff them full of Celebrex and Ambien and Prozac until they go on a crime spree or commit suicide. Nice.

Celebrex? For osteo or rheumatoid arthritis? Did you mean Cymbalta? That’s also good for stress urinary incontinence you know, so at least you won’t piss yourself when you feel compelled to commit suicide as a side effect of the drug. I’ve got a bottle of that on my meds shelf. I’ve got a whole list of the latest anti-depressants on that shelf, rejected as ineffective in non-peer reviewed Duncan studies. There’s even several Marinol gelcaps left over from 1991. Then again the transient psychosis caused by Prozac in 1991 or 1992 makes me skittish about taking these things too long. There’s something disturbing about finding yourself barricaded in a port-a-potty screaming at the cops who simply wanted to help me, help me into a rubber room. I can’t put my finger on why, but I didn’t particularly care for that experience for some reason. Please don’t ask how someone ends up barricaded in a port-a-potty surrounded by cops with no crime whatever involved. It was just happenstance. There was a port-a-potty there, it’s not like I went out looking for one. I’m sure I would have barricaded myself into a number of other structures or vehicles had there not been a port-a-potty handy. But I’ve got to be grateful for being forced to give up the cannabis due to being on probation for growing muggles. Sheesh, I might have gotten stoned instead!

Just remember, FDA approved drugs are safe and effective! Heck, I was only psychotic for 3 or maybe 4 days at the most. Isn’t some level of minor discomfort or inconvenience acceptable?

In the second sentence, they blame drug use AND IT’S CONSEQUENCES for harming society. Do they not realize they are the souce of the majority of the consequences? They must think they are helping drug users when they punish them.

I am always reminded of these words when I see a drug prohibitionist:

With such thinking, the prohib is only the other face of the same coin which has the likeness of the murdering cartel member on the other side, joined together at the rim by drug prohibition.
Ive never understood taking someone who may be having a drug problem, whether it be heroine or meth and such, whos life is difficult and making their life a living hell by aressts, loss of freedom,job,family…just makes no damned sense…then again, government doesnt operate on common sense.

These prohibitionists do believe that punishment is helping.

Unfortunately I do know why.
Violence is something they understand. Violence is what they identify with. Violence is the American way. Violence is their most effective and first choice as tool to their ends. That’s why.
Those involved in the wrong end of the war on certain drugs are treated much the same way as political dissidents in the Gulag system. Rapists, murderers and robbers are afforded better treatment than those who won’t toe the party line against certain states of mind.

To these people, drug use and abuse are the same evil thing.
However, even the Controlled Substances Act differentiates the two by stating that recreational use “has a high potential for abuse”.
As long as too many people believe drug use and abuse are the same, we will find ourselves struggling a whole lot more to achieve victory.
There is no conclusive science (at least for cannabis and LSD25) proving drug use and abuse are the same, and so the self-righteous prohibitionists’ swapping of use and abuse for their convenience rests firmly within the realm of unethical.
Scott,the ONDCP and all it’s satellite agencies are excused from using science as a deciding factor in their policies,,,,don’t you know?
