At the Drug Czar’s “blog”: ONDCP and Canada Renew Partnership in Substance Abuse Work
Last month Director Kerlikowske visited Ottawa, Canada to share the Obama Administration’s efforts to restore balance to drug control efforts and discuss drug issues affecting both sides of the border.
Ah yes, “balance.” That’s the code word that the drug czar likes to use to excuse why, if he’s already ended the drug war, and they know that supply side policy doesn’t work, they still use so much enforcement. It’s really a “balanced” approach of [and then they mumble] mostly law enforcement. It’s sort of like calling it a balanced approach to a diet when you have a diet coke after eating an entire Death by Chocolate.

Interesting wording there. Perhaps a staffer in the office doesn’t realize that Canada is a sovereign nation (actually, perhaps the entire office doesn’t realize that) and going “to Canada” isn’t going “to the Canada” — it’s not like going “to the mall.”
He also discussed how these measures, combined with smarter use of law enforcement, could help reduce the southbound flow of drugs, especially methamphetamine and ecstasy, from Canada into the U.S. and stream of guns into Canada from the U.S.
Yep, there’s the real agenda. Supply-side, pure and simple.

Really? He is so determined to beat this dead horse. He apparently sees his claim to fame (other than ending the drug war, of course) to be the creation of an international epidemic of drugged driving out of thing air all by himself. I wonder what those “cross-border issues on drugged driving” are? Do we have a lot of people who are driving high and failing to stop at checkpoints? Is drugged driving something that is catching and they might have to seal the border to keep it from spreading?
During meetings with Mr. William J.S Elliott, Commissioner of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and with members of the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police Drug Abuse Committee, Director Kerlikowske discussed current drug-related challenges and explored opportunities for cross-border collaboration across a range of law enforcement of issues.

Just how much ‘collaboration’ are Canadians willing to engage in, seeing as in the past US LEOs have actually run checkpoints on Canadian soil? How much more ‘collaboration’ can they stand when the Harper Regime has practically negated Canuck sovereignty with the Emery Affair?

ONDCP should at least stop referring to him as “Director Kerlikowske” and shift over to “Czar Gil”. It’s like imperialism mixed with The Simpsons.

It’s not hard to see why people would fail to identify Canada as a sovereign nation when for all intents and purposes it’s the lapdog of the US of A.
This is news to me.about the guns going north I mean. I knew that there were plenty going south because there is a civil war going on in Mexico but this is the first I have heard of guns being shipped into Canada,,,,,are you guy’s up there fixing to start something?

What’s happening down here is far from being classified as a “Civil War.” It’s just a conflict between the crooks and the state. You can’t call Chicago in the 30s a “civil war.”
Where I live, you hear very little about the in-country problems. I think they’ve decided that my area is “neutral.”
That’s why I have to laugh when I heard the pundits and people up there referring to Mexico as a “possible failed state.” It’s no where near that, believe me.
The problem, as I see it, is the Army here seems to shun engagement, whereas, the Naval Marines are the “first contact” group. They seem to be the only ones who actually “engage” the “enemy.” If the Army acted like the Marines, this stuff would be over a lot quicker. And, as far as I can tell, there is NO Mexican Air Force to turn to for help. There IS an Army Helicopter School not to far from me but I’ve truly seen no action there. Must just be a school house area without a flight line.
I, also, didn’t know Canada had a “gun running” problem up there.

If the Army acted like the Marines, this stuff would be over a lot quicker.
That “stuff” will never be over so long as there is so much money to be made. Military might can’t do a thing to stop economic reality.

I’m far from an expert here, but if I recall correctly, Canadians are generally not able to legally purchase and possess firearms. As has been noted once or twice on this site before, any prohibition will create a criminal black market. Sounds like this is no exception.
One of the most rewarding things about being talking-head prohibitionists, is knowing that you will ultimately never be held responsible for not sharing a cohesive strategy. Spewing a pontificated cluster of tough sounding scenarios is good enough to maintain your importance.

This is not something that even the press has been presenting favourably. I’ve gone through over sixty articles over the last two years on this shameful anachronistic charade and only two journalists are slanted in the government’s favour. And over 50% of Canadians who support marijuana legalization will be able to figure out that most cases are going to be individuals or couples caught growing the lowest number of plants in the same punishment range. After all how are you going to fill up your new prisons if you cap your incarcerated cannabist population at wholesalers and not incarcerate the much more populous hobby gardeners? All taxpayers should keep in mind that on average in Canada it costs $102,000 per year to keep a person in a federal penitentiary.
In 1988, Nicholson even vice-chaired a Parliamentary committee that released a report recommending mandatory minimum sentences not be used, except in the case of repeat violent sexual offenders. The committee found, based on testimony and the U.S. experience, that the law didn’t work and increases prison populations.

Rob Nicholson’s pronouncement on mandatory minimum’s: “Each case should be decided on its own facts.” NDP MP Libby Davies (Vancouver East, B.C.), whose party voted against Bill C-15, said Mr. Nicholson’s zest for introducing mandatory minimum sentences for drug crimes is purely political.
“This has got to be an evidence-based process, and of course he couldn’t show any. All he could say was that he believed that Canadians wanted this legislation. To discover a Parliamentary report that he was a signatory to that comes to the same conclusion that we have, that mandatory minimum’s don’t work for drug crimes, I think that’s very incredible. It’s reinforcement that what they are doing is not based on any evidence whatsoever. It’s a political stance that they’re taking that has nothing to do with solving Canada’s serious drug issues.â€

Here’s a few predictions on Stephen Harper’s legacy:
1) Jailing people who are involved with marijuana will become job security for too many in the prison industry and government as the shocking rise in the criminal rate will warrant.
2) These ominous laws will affect hobby gardeners and their families the most.
3) The expansion of prisons will not reduce violence on our streets.
4) Organized crime’s entrenched foothold in Canada expands to degrees never even remotely discussed.
It would be interesting to be in on the discussions and the ledger books that changed the Conservative’s minds from opposing, to vehemently forcing the failed U.S. mandatory minimum policy on its Canadian citizens.

I Thought the ONDCP’s job was drug control, when did it absorb the ATFB(or what ever its called today). If its controlling guns now shouldnt it be called ONDGCP?

I’m here on the Canadian Border. The problem is the same here as in the South. Easy availability of firearms, and U.S. Citizens all too willing to make “straw-man” purchases here for a few extra bucks. Vancouver has had a particularly bad time, with alot of Asian and Motorcycle gangs and violence. The problems got worse when Harper came in and crackdowns on trafficking started (go figure). Many people don’t understand that Vancouver is a huge city, and has alot more in common with New York or Amsterdam than with Seattle or Portland, having a very large immigrant/refugee population and a lot of very cohesive ethnic ‘ghetto’s’ (in the traditional connotation).

As an aside, I used to travel a great deal, and my three favorite cities in the world are in this order, Seattle, Vancouver, and Malaga, Spain.
Vancouver beats out New York which comes in fourth.

Feds Warn Oakland on Pot Farms
Officials from the Justice Department’s civil division and the U.S. attorney’s office in San Francisco delivered the blunt message to Oakland City Attorney John Russo, according to two officials who asked not to be identified because they were not authorized to talk about the meetings.
