A couple of people have requested the ability to edit their own comments after posting — you know, that horrible thing where you see that blatant typo right after you post.
Well, I’ve just purchased Ajax Edit Comments and added it to the site. It should allow you to edit comments for a short time after posting, or to request to delete the post, etc., and it even has a spell checker.
I imagine that this will have its own issues that we need to find and fix, and there are a ton of settings that I have for Ajax Edit Comments that I can try different approaches (more time, different options, different layouts, etc.).
Feel free to experiment in the comments on this post, and let me know how it works for you.
Testing this new commenting system. OK, clicking on the box with the arrows, brings up this huge comment box with big type that’s easy to see. Spell check appears to be a matter of clicking on the ABC. Then it underlines the words it doesn’t recognize in red and, if you click on the word, it gives you options.
It appears that the edit comments feature loads slower than the rest of the site. There’s a bit of a delay before you see the new icons.
I’m curious to know what you all see under the “More Options” button. I’m the admin, so I probably have more options than you do.
Purchased? Ugh, that’s how it is these days?
Dont see a more or any options button.
Pop up comment box with save and return button that takes you back to the old box. A submit comment button I’m trying now…
spell√ optionionskgw = underlined in red with a pop up saying no writing errors were found…
It always comes back to values

Posted ok, edit works timer giving me 2 min and counting.
Click to Edit, Request Deletion disappeared after time ran out.

I’m using the Camino Browser on Snow Leopard
1) Underlines typos in red, giving alternatives.
2) Underlines pairs of words in green if hyphens are needed -Nice feature.
3) Failed to recognize ‘bengies’ as UK street slang for cash -Yes, I’m being purposely pedantic.
4) There does not appear to be a ‘more options’ button.
5) HTML: ‘This should be in bold italics’ -does not appear in ‘preview’ after returning from the ‘huge comment box’ to normal view until typing is resumed.
6) Gave me 5 minutes, with a visible count-down, to make corrections.
7) I also have a ‘request deletion’ button
Nice work Pete. Definitely an improvement. I especially like the ‘large comment box’
Thank you, Pete.
Ditto: Click to Edit, Request Deletion disappeared after time ran out.
Woot! Bigger, ajaxier comment editing box.
Huh? HTML-ASDFG it’s all alphabet soup to me….half the time posting I’m in such a hurry I don’t even have time to spell check….”tipee-typee-postey….did I write that?” Ugh. You should just do what my wife says I should do and place a (sic) after each sentance. O.K. Let’s see if I can figgur this oot.
Cool! the edit function seems to work. About the spell checker….in my comment above, replete with errors and pseudo-words, the only error it recognized was “HTML-ASDFG”, the others sailed right through.
Oh, and when triggered the spell check box expands, partially dissapearing under the right border on the site. This may be my browser, as this is my “disposable” netbook, not my actual home or office computer.
ok… let the old guy w/ dial-up try this new-fangled comment box. Shit… I gnow how to spell already (nope, didn’t catch that) and it’s just a matter of always waiting for stuff to load. Box and type font all same size as before (Flock is m’browser)… well if it makes other folks happy, I’m happy. I’ll be happier when my coffee is ready, dammit!
aah… I do like the click to edit option… Nice Pete! Prolly better spent money than getting a pair o’ fuzzy dice for your car window.
My comment is awaiting moderation.
When someone requests deletion, it ends up being going to moderation. I originally thought it would make more sense for it just to be deleted, but I guess this is in case someone had already responded to it, so I’d know what prompted the response.
Ah, human interface is required. Spell check is worthless, but the edit function seems to work pretty well. Nice. Its a good addition.
Let’s see how this works for me with Chrome (which has its own built in spell checker). Works fine.
Trying with FireFox
