Bishop Ron Allen is pissed that the California NAACP is backing the California legalization movement. Allen, apparently, has no problem with the high incarceration rates of blacks or the Jim Crow drug laws. Perhaps all the broken families in the black communities drive more people to his church?
Anyway, in this press release, Bishop Allen fails to address a single point made by the NAACP regarding its good reasons for supporting the referendum. Instead, he goes ballistic over… George Soros.
Bishop Ron Allen says, “It is time to take a closer look at how decisions are made at the California NAACP and what the contributing factors were that caused Alice Huffman to side with Proposition 19. California NAACP President Alice Huffman is selling out the very people that the NAACP has a history of protecting. She has been bought and paid for by the highest bidder, in this case it is George Soros, his Open Society Institute and the Soros Foundation Network. We know Soros is a major contributor to the NAACP and he is a primary funding source for the legalization of marijuana worldwide. With Huffman’s position on legalization, she is destroying the good work the NAACP has done for the African American people, and she is discrediting the good name of the NAACP. She has sold us out for her personal financial gain and I call for her immediate resignation. Alice Huffman, step down as the President of the California NAACP now and restore its good name.”
If Bishop Allen cares at all about African American people, it’s time for him to address the real factors that have hurt that community — especially the racist and destructive drug war.
I’d love for someone to dig into Bishop Allen’s claim to represent “3,600 congregations” (in numerous news stories). His website looks unprofessional and has very little information to back up the claim.
Actually Bishop Allen’s call for Huffman’s resignation is a good thing. This is a community which has shied from this discussion. When the whole of the NAACP begins to learn the truth of the drug war (read: pull their heads out of the sand) they will agree with California NAACP. There is but one conclusion one can reach when shown the the blatant racism of the drug war.
Hopefully a hornet’s nest has been stirred and this will have a large ripple effect. Anytime the conversation ratchets up publicly, we win, either by more of our voices and points get heard or they display their ass-holiness and tip more undecided our way. Look what Mz Taylor’s rant on YouTube has done… no one can watch that and NOT think, “omg, this woman is a bizarre and shrill shrieker.”

It’s always suprised me that more black demagogues aren’t calling for an end to the drug war. They love to talk about the devastation “drugs” are causing in their communities, but for some reason don’t notice that it’s prohibition.

Let’s not forget that it was another bishop; Episcopalian Bishop Charles Henry Brent, that initiated global drug prohibition. He persuaded Teddy Roosevelt to intervene in China to stop opium from reaching the Philippine Island, where he believed smoking opium was keeping island Catholics from converting to the Episcopalian faith. The fact he was a lousy preacher escaped him.
Brent led the U.S. delegation at the International Opium Commission, held February 1, 1909 in Shanghai (leading to a temporary shift in opium distribution, but no real change in consumption). This was the opening shot of global drug prohibition, culminating when Congress passed the Harrison Narcotics Act of 1914.
As long as redemption remains a central tenet of organized religion, organized religion will always need sinners. So don’t expect organized religion to get religion on the drug issue any time soon.

We should thank the dim-witted “Bishop” Allen. He telegraphed a punch for us. We’re going to hear a lot about George Soros this fall.

Reading the article about Prohibition and some of the reference materials leads me to think there ARE parallels to this issue:
Clergymen from the 1800’s saw the damage alcohol was causing society – in 1830 the average American drank 1.7 bottles of hard liquor per week.
Clergyman of today see the same issues among their youth and their families.
We need to re-focus on the social issues, but until Marijuana is legalized there will be too many among us who know we’re being lied to, and will resent it.
And I’m a Chistian, homeowner in So Orange County, husband and father. I’d like to think i’m not a criminal in the eyes of my wife, but that will not happen until it’s legalized.
And please stop believing if it’s safe the government would make it legal – think about it – if you were given a house and a car would you give them up willingly just to tell the bigger truth? No, you’d focus on the neccessary metrics to support the budget increases and pay increases to keep doing your job well. And they have, but I don’t want to spend my tax dollars on it anymore, so thanks for letting me vote – our initiative, our vote, that’s the ONLY way it’ll change.
