With the Woodstock anniversary and the new Ang Lee film “Taking Woodstock” in the news, that whole “movement” is once again being discussed.
I was too young to really experience the hippy movement. And yes, I wish I had. Oh, I don’t mean that I would have dropped out and joined a commune, but I would have liked to have been there. I did go to college in Iowa in the 1970s, which is about when the 60s reached Iowa, so I got a taste, but to have actually been to Woodstock or Haight-Ashbury…. that would have been something.
I realize that as a “movement” it was flawed — perhaps overly idealistic, a little naïve, lacking the follow-through to change the world, but the concepts were just fine: Peace, love, music, inner spiritual exploration, anti-authoritarianism, cultural diversity… and a little pot.
So I’m a bit surprised by the depth of vicious hatred for hippies (and all things hippy) I sometimes see out there.
What particularly caught my attention was a “review” at Breitbart’s Big Hollywood (yeah, I know, I shouldn’t go there) of Ang Lee’s film by John Nolte: ‘Taking Woodstock’: Mythologizing the Worst Generation. I haven’t seen the film, and I have no idea if it’s any good, but the review wasn’t so much about the film…
In the late 1960s there were young people in college and starting families, young people far from home fighting and dying for the sovereignty of our allies in Vietnam, young people just starting to see results from their brave and noble fight for Civil Rights, and then there were the dirty, filthy hippies – the most spoiled, narcissistic, ungrateful species in the history of mankind – whose legacy of drug addiction, STDs, the misery of single motherhood and 2 million left dead on the Killing Fields of Cambodia, still reverberates forty years on.
Wow. Now that’s some hatred. (Check out the comments section for even more.)
There’s a lot more of it out there around the web. Some of it seems to be directed against the anti-war movement (that I did participate in somewhat — I was a draft counselor in college) and some seems to just generally be an unreasoning hatred for all things related to hippy culture (the music, the long hair, the lack of bras, the pot, the way they talk, their relaxed attitude, their tie-dying and beads, their lack of body shame, their narcissistic lack of capitalist greed…)
Hmmm…. It’s re-awakened the nostalgia for something I never experienced. Now I’m trying to decide whether to drop $50 on: Woodstock: 3 Days of Peace & Music Director’s Cut. Maybe I’ll just put on a little Santana while I think about it.
What do you think?
Not sure whether you should drop $50 on the Woodstock compilation or not. But maybe dropping some acid first will help you decide! (Just don’t forget to listen to some Santana and Floyd…)
Yes, I attended college in the 70s and saw the ass-end of the Woodstock generation as it retreated from its public demonization into apologetic yuppie lifestyles. What’s with all the hatred for hippies?
As I understand it, the war-party conservatives launched another campaign just after the Vietnam war using the Iran Hostage Crisis as a catalyst. They blamed Carter for being too soft (on Iran and drugs), and completely exaggerated the problem with drugs, blaming it for everything from rebellious adolescent behavior and puberty to the loss of the Vietnam war.
Furthermore, they put the propaganda campaign together in a package that included drugs, sex, and rock n roll, all those things that defined the unique culture of the Woodstock generation and hippies were at the center of it all.
By the time Reagan and Bush made it into the WH in 1981, the propaganda campaign was in full-swing, and the main idea of it was to blame the long-haired, pot-smoking hippies for all the world’s problems to take the pressure off the corporate ruling-class that controlled politics and big government.
They needed a scapegoat and long-haired, pot-smoking hippies were it. The fact that hippies were mostly nonviolent, peace-loving people was merely a plus, under the circumstances, because they put up much less of a fight when the blame began to fall upon them. it’s a shame that so many Americans fell for the big lie.
silly me, i’ve always thought it was the khmer rouge that killed all those cambodians.
seriously, i had no idea that pol pot was a hippie!
There is a real philosophical problem that many in government have with the what the 1960’s represented…to them. Many of those who subscribed to the Straussian school of social organization (a.k.a. NeoConservatism) viewed any increase of civil political activism as being a symptom of social breakdown, not health. Thus, anything even remotely indicative of the times were to be shunned.
As Dan Baum put it in his Smoke and Mirrors, the modern incarnation of the DrugWar was Tricky Dick’s delayed reaction to the Viet Nam War protests. It was itself pointless as his targets, the hippies, were themselves disappearing into obscurity as the Recession of 1973-79 began to get underway. It was a parting shot at a long-vanished enemy.
As society became more liberalized through the 1970’s, thanks in no small part to the revelations of misdeeds during the Nixon regime becoming widespread, the demand to decriminalize cannabis gained traction until the reversal of 1980. The rise of authoritarianism in American politics short-circuited the drive to fix an terrible wrong, and the deficit spending engaged in by Reagan and every Prez after him enabled the burgeoning of the DrugWar at the exact time when it should have been dismantled. We all know the result.
So, now, after nearly 30 years of deficit spending, the country’s broke, we can’t afford a pot to pee in, yet there’s all these DrugWarriors thinking their precious gravy train’s gonna keep on rollin’, and we the taxpayers will blindly continue to pay for it. It’s indicative of the problem that those who claimed by be seeing reality clearly are the ones who have the most distorted view of it.
I was dirty and filthy, flies wouldn’t even land on me. Of course, that was in ’65/’66 while I was slogging the rice paddies of the Central Highlands of Vietnam. When I got out in ’69, I just changed from basic green to obvious colors. I also count myself lucky to have made the to trek to Max’s farm. I’m surprised by the “STD” comment since the worse you’d encounter is an injection. AIDS didn’t come til much, much later.
It wasn’t all fun and games. We had our own little “battles” going on. Just listen to the words of the song “For What It’s Worth.”
I find most down on Woodstock simply because they couldn’t, wouldn’t or didn’t go. They screwed up and they’ve realized it for 40 years and don’t like to be reminded of it.
The Haight changed drastically, quickly. It quickly lost much of it’s allure. The main driving force then was getting out of Vietnam. I had already been there and knew the truth. Many had no concept.
More than anything, it was a time of some great music and artists.
what gets me is the celebration of gang thug culture today – all based on violence and misogyny, whereas the hippy movement more readily embraced peace.
I think more of the hippie hate was in this article‘s comment. Common sentiment: “People enjoyed themselves in ways I don’t approve!”

Oh, and this morning’s fresh outrage:
Kelowna, BC: Handicapped Man’s Wheelchair Seized Over Medical Marijuana
http://cannabisculture.com/v2/content/handicapped-mans-wheelchair-seized-over-medical-marijuana
CANNABIS CULTURE – A Canadian care home resident with full body paralysis was confined to his bed against his will after his wheelchair was seized by caregivers – all because he smokes medical marijuana to relieve his Multiple Sclerosis.
CHBC news reported yesterday that Nyle Nagy, a Kelowna, British Columbia man who lives at the Brookhaven care home, was forcefully removed from his wheelchair and put in bed for a week after manager Adrien Vaughan objected to his legal use of medical marijuana.
“She sent two men over here to take my wheelchair and tell me that I’ve got to stay in this chair for seven days, as a punishment”, Nagy told the TV crew.
“To get rid of my pain and my spasms, that’s the only two reasons I smoke it” said Nagy, who has a license from the Canadian government to smoke marijuana.
The news comes in the wake of a similar abuse case in Vancouver where a diabetic, double-amputee woman died after being evicted for legally smoking medical marijuana.
I agree with you. (I was born in ’64, so it was the background noise on the radio as I was a kid.)
The ‘review’ seems to be yet another example of the American Right’s attempt to obliterate every last trace of the ’60s from popular consciousness. After all, those ‘filthy hippies’ opened the world up to minority, woman and gay rights, alternatives to xtianity and capitalism and popularised open and consensual use of sex and drugs to alter minds… you can see why they have a grue against it.
I blame the extreme extent of drug prohibition entirely on hippies. Yes, they were locking up the chinese for opium and the blacks for cocaine and the mexicans for pot before 1969’s summer of love, but it’s the hippies, and their need to flaunt drug use while simultaneously acting crazy, looking filthy, breaking every social construct, and flat out scaring the status quo to death that gave the powers that be the best reason and the best excuse to blame everything on drugs. Hippies changed drug prohibition to a “save the children and protect our way of life” policy when it was based solely on racism beforehand.
This was the time when all sorts of new drugs were being developed, and instead of using them responsibly, at home, wearing normal clothes, the hippies had to dance naked in the streets and make jackasses out of themselves – all while making it very clear that they were using drugs.
Hippies ruined drugs for EVERYONE.
I’m not saying there would be no controlled substances act if there had not been hippies, but we wouldn’t have had Nixon and a “war on drugs” with outrageous penalties, the destruction of the Bill of Rights, and 1 in 100 Americans locked up in prison if it were not for the hippies. Drugs would not have the horrible reputation they have, and would not be so feared by the general public if it were not for the hippies. Marijuana would have been legalized by the mid-1990s if it were not for the hippies. If medical marijuana would help you but you can’t legally acquire it, blame the hippies.
I truly hate hippies. They ruined drugs for everyone, and the harm has proven to be irreversible. Anyone who supports decriminalization and opposes the drug war should hate hippies too. Hipppies are always the best, worst example of why drugs “must be illegal.”
Imagine how school integration would have turned out if the african americans students immediately started to assault, rape, and murder the white students and teachers at the newly integrated schools. That’s what hippies did to drugs.
Your post is very intriguing about Woodstock. At the time, I was a 23 year old student at San Jose State. Although I didn’t attend Woodstock, it was a turning point in movement politics at the close of the decade.

Wow, I could not agree with the last poster more or say it more succinctly. Hippies really did single-handedly destroy the image of drug use and helped to expand the war on drugs even further than in earlier years. Also their idealism was so naive and so ignorant that it makes me sick to watch movies about the music that I love so dearly. Plus, I would love to know where all these former hippies went? One would think that they grew up to become more open-minded, more change-oriented as they grew older and gained power in society. You would think that as they grew older they would make those changes they seemed to care so much about. However it seems as though the movement died as the hippies aged and betrayed the things they believed in by joining the establishment. Where are they now seeking the same reform they seemed to care so much about. It’s a generation that clearly DID NOT FOLLOW THROUGH.
Bruce pretty much nailed my perception, and the perception shared by a lot of my generation (I’m 28), of hippies. They were extremely irresponsible, and then overwhelmingly grew up to support the status quo and make sure younger generations get f***ed for the same s*** they pulled.
They scared the whole world into thinking that people can’t be trusted with drugs.
Hmmm… I don’t know, but it seems to me that blaming hippies for drug prohibition is a little like blaming Mexicans or Negro Jazz Musicians for drug prohibition.
I blame the extreme extent of drug prohibition entirely on hippies.
Yes Bruce but you’re a fucking moron.
What else would you think? Oh and btw, Fuck Off!
What? Its Over? Nuthin’s over til the phat lady sings the blues…
Do these Conservatudes realize the savings I’ve made in avoiding barbershops 40 years? Nick Nolte made one of the best, most realistic films concerning Ganja I’ve ever seen. North Dallas 40 I think. A football movie at that. After the games Nolte and Mac Davis would smoke a joint to relax and take care of the pain. None of the cheech and chong or overly baked stoner images. Just a normal toke as if it wasn’t the main part of the scene. Never had brown acid made infamous at Woodstock, but loved the chocolate mesc, 6 hours of laughter. White Powders still suck and booze is a white powder to me. I’ve worked most of the past 40 years and the last 20 doing hospice work that is very satisfying and not a bad way to make a buck. Where’s Billy Jack?
Woodstock represented music and those selling it. The Hippies all died in 67, they even had a funeral. The end of hippie commercialism before it started. The Partridge family style of hippies was the almost final nail in the coffin. I remember thinking it was definately over when Grace Slick sang the pop tune miracles. Not that it stopped the counterculture spirit. Carter was sabotaged by Boosh, as Rayguns VP. That and his brother. As well as the untrue gossip story by Life Ragazine about so called hippies spitting on soldiers. Bullshit. Not even logical. My high school friends who went to Nam, I had a high ping pong ball and in 71 it was winding down. But anyone I’ve ever met who did serve thought it was insulting to think big strong GI’s would take that or any abuse from anyone, let alone peaceniks. Or that passive stoners would do such a thing. Same rag printed the BS about Hell’s Angles taking over Hayward. Just never happened, but it did increase circulation.
Same war monger mentalities then stigmatizing hippies as those sending kids to die in the sand over a lie in Iraq today. Same assbite drug worrier idiots selling the Ganjawar. What I hate more than ignorant red necks racism towards hippies. Are the appeasers who want the image tye dyes and day glow and acid rock just to sell a product. Hell, Vietnam protests in DC, with the Beach Boys and killer midwest kynd bud. Rain, 50k people and plenty of cheap doobies was my first. Since then I’ve attended hundreds of mini woodstocks, outdoor concerts and arena’s later, and still firing it up. I’ve tried to see most of those bands still possible to see. Never did take Carlos Castaneda too seriously, had fun searching though. Met Leary and Kesey and finally toured the final dozen or so dead shows in the late 80’s’early 90’s. I wear hemp clothing since its available and smoke prettier buds without seeds, stems or leaves to take out first. My music hasn’t changed and in spite of trying to live “naturally”, CD’s are way better than 8 tracks.
I’ve lived in central Florida as the town’s token hippie and not one time did I ever experience negativity about my looks. I did the job and thats what they paid me to do. Not my hair or riding high tee shirt. I truly believe in some ways the “country” so called rednecks were more down to earth “hippies” than the plastic hipsters in Santa Cruz today. Turn on tune in and drop acid, though today I’m more prone to occasional mushrooms or peyote, being natural. The acid is better measured and even has cartoons on the paper. The liquid is pure and mellow. Not like the old orange sunshine. Went to the city for a Giants game, or the MMM each year. Haight is pretty expensive nowadays. Ben and Jerry’s made out. Now shops and vendors selling nostalgia and really overpriced hemp. Mendocino got a lot of those cashing in on the movement, now their kids are filling the coffers with pot sales. I still pick up an occasional hitchhiker making their way back to Eugene. Gaskin’s farm sounds like a nice place to retire. Except its in Tennessee. Right Arm – Farm Out,

When the crime is so minor, having marijuana, and the punishment is so unreasonable, taking people’s homes and years of their lives, as well as a very real Twentieth century shunning, one is forced to look for deeper motives. I have come to believe that it is not the proscription of a substance but the systematic oppression of a certain kind of people. There have been a whole series of decisions made, on local, state and federal levels, to the effect that hippies, by which is meant any committed liberal persons, are undesireable and are to be banned, interdicted, harrassed, discouraged, arrested and pee-tested. It is a blatant use of police power to frighten and intimidate millions of people into giving up a heartfelt spiritual practice and lifestyle.
There are probably 25 million marijuana smokers in the United States alone, as well as millions more who if not smokers now, are still sentimental about it. The oppression to which I refer is for the purpose of keeping these millions of people off balance to minimize their political power. All those 500,000 pot smokers doing time are out of the political process, present but not able to vote. The urine test is the loyalty oath of the Nineties. The hippies are this season’s Jews, this season’s Reds…
Who are these people? We are the yeast that makes the dough rise. And it’s not just us, there’s been people like us for centuries. Before there were hippies, there were beatniks, before there beatniks, there were bohemians. The European counterculture ran away from Nazî Germany. They brought hundreds of thousands of artists and musicians and writers into this country. Before that there were people like George Bernard Shaw and Voltaire and all the way back to Socrates. There have always been that fraction of people who have said, “I want to see the truth.”

DdC: No name-calling against other commenters, please. Disagree, but civilly.
BruceM, Shap, and Balloon Maker are a perfect example of the idiots who were fooled by the undercover agent-provacateurs and narcs who were paid by the FBI and DEA to infiltrate and sabotage the peace-movement of the 60s and 70s. I’m not saying all hippies were without their flaws, but I must insist that the real damage was done by federal fakers with a plan to turn the public against the Woodstock generation and the peaceful culture it represented.
As a person who was born too late to participate in the ’60’s, I’m very disappointed with those who said they were going to change the world and make a difference for the better and then joined the establishment and wagged their fingers at us for doing the same things that they did. Then they flipped us the bird and took everything that wasn’t nailed down.
Most of these ‘best and brightest’ of the ’60’s gave us the present economic meltdown because of their greed, excess and narcissism. Phil and Wendy Gramm, et al, looking at you and all you who choose to leave ez in the ‘nam while you ate wine and cheese and rode your student deferments.
I was born in ’61, so I get it from the x-ers and the boomers. Too old to be an x-er and too young to have reaped the benefits of being able to have a job at a time when jobs paid well and had any kind of job security. Now those boomers are hogging up all of the good jobs and not letting anyone behind them get a turn at a descent job.
“The urine test is the loyalty oath of the Nineties.”
How many boomers willingly gave up their liberty because they stopped using cannabis and were into something legal or less detectable? How many sold out for a job which was outsourced, offshored, downsized for the corporate profits and the CEO’s yacht?
We may be talking at mixed purposes here (at least in part). I consider there to be a significant difference between hippies and the baby boom generation. Hippy was a lifestyle choice, boomers were a generation, which included some hippies (in fact, hippies were an extremely small portion of the boomer generation). If some hippies stopped being hippies and started being something less idealistic, that’s not a strike against hippies.
For example, I work with artists, and over the years I’ve seen many sell out and give up on their talent in order to pursue the picket fence and BMW. That doesn’t make me upset with art or artists. It makes me sad about those who squandered a dream.
I agree that I’m disappointed with my generation.
Pete,
While I agree with you that the hippies were only a small part of the boomer generation, it seems like every commercial or media reference to the boomers is made in the context of the ‘Woodstock Generation’. I know many people who are boomers who didn’t go to Woodstock or even lead a bohemian lifestyle.
However, the generation which spawned the hippies had a lot more freedom to choose and prosperity than those who followed and I for one feel let down by my older brothers and sisters who sold out to unsustainable lifestyles because they could and squandered their liberty for temporary security.
I don’t know of many hippies who remained true to their word, maybe they moved to El Salvador, Guatamala or Costa Rica.
Whoa there Nick with the conspiracies. We all want the same thing. I just see these videos of thousands of hippies gathering at festivals like Woodstock and Altamont and wonder where they all went? Where are they to fight for this cause specifically? They betrayed themselves when they got older. I think that most of them when they had children lived in fear that maybe just maybe their children would do some if not all of the things that they did and as a reaction to such fear support that status quo which is prohibition. If there are hippies that fit this description, then they should be ashamed of themselves.
I’m aware that the government infiltrated hippies and other such groups back in the 60’s and 70’s (COINTELPRO, etc.).
But hippies and their flaunting of drug use while simultaneously pissing on everything society at the time considered sacred was more than enough the turn the masses against drugs. They made it too easy to make drugs the universal scapegoat for everything the status quo was worried about during such rapidly changing times.
I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with universal peace and love. By all means those are great goals. I’m not saying the status quo shouldn’t have changed. It should have. But hippies singlehandedly did more to hurt the concept of “the right to use drugs” and more to create mass hysteria and panic over what drugs are “doing to our children” than anything the government could have ever done.
The government saying hippies were a communist conspiracy and other such nonsense had little if anything to do with what most people thought of hippies. And drugs and hippies went hand in hand to the point where to most people it looked as though drug use CAUSED people to be hippies.
At a time when some of the greatest, most novel drugs were being invented and were freely available, hippies were so damn selfish they ruined it for everyone. Because of hippies, I’ll never get to try a Quaalude. Pot is a Schedule I drug because of the hippies. Same with LSD.
And indeed, what happened to all these hippies? They sold out and became baby boomers shopping at Pottery Barn as they tell their kids to just say no.
I’m sure Woodstock was a lot of fun and one helluva concert. I would have loved to have been there. That’s not the point. If you’re and old former hippie and don’t like what I’m saying, then you can go screw yourself. Your generation ruined the idea of legal, responsible drug use for everyone else – likely for the rest of eternity. Every generation (including mine) has to suffer because you hippies couldn’t handle your damn drugs. It’s not even a matter of handling them, you had to actively flaunt your drug use and shove it in the face of the powers that be, guaranteeing that they’d go apeshit and ban everything. Assholes.
Let me sum up my point by saying this: “drugs are dangerous and must all be seriously banned” was an extremely logical, rational response to what the hippies were doing (proudly and openly using drugs while doing it).
There would not be a Controlled Substances Act if there had not been hippies. Yes some hard drugs would be illegal – they were illegal before the 60s. But it would have been regulated at the state level and there would be no DEA, no drug war, and no mass anti-drug government propaganda if there had not been a generation that used drugs so insanely irresponsibly.
Drug laws have been used to mark groups of people (Mexicans, Chinese) as scapegoats long before the hippie generation. It’s ancient tradition and would probably have happened to the hippies even if they had not flaunted their drug use so openly. If any blame for the drug war can be laid on them, it’s not because they selfishly ruined it, but because they were too confident that their movement, values, etc. would prevail.
Blame the bastards in power who made the laws, not the hippies.
Wow…got some serious hippie-baiting going on here. Yeah… those damn hippies. They were the first to warn us about speed – “Speed Kills†– and they were really never a “they.â€
And I hate to tell ya but they’re still with us folks. Attend a Rainbow Gathering some day. Talk about standing up for independence and citizen autonomy.
The Rainbows get maligned every year, no matter where they go they dance the same tume w/ the locals. Yet if you follow the post-Gathering news, damned if the USFS folks don’t proclaim how well the site was reclaimed. Heck, a few years back at the Gathering in AZ those damn hippies captured a dangerous criminal trying to hide in their midst.
Here in Oregon the hippies worked in the woods (google Oregon hoedads) and fought toe to toe w/ rednecks to earn our way here. Now we are Oregon. We’re everywhere in this state. A local pol was the original founder of the local NORML chapter way back in the day. And they don’t forget, they just moved on.
Like any of society’s sub cultures, hippies had their bubbas. They still do, but so does every other group. And they gave us cannabis back.
“Ruined drugs”… please. Stupid ruined drugs. Hippies started Rockmed, a distinct medical field that deals with handling those who’ve had too much drugs in public venues. Y’all sound like those folks who used to cry about the “ignorant blacks”… or the “lazy Mes’cans.â€
We had a saying when I was a young GI – FOAD. That day nearly 35 years ago when I got my discharge papers was the day I began boycotting barber shops. I am “a hippie.†But I’m a redneck one and I’ve no shame for being a peace-loving-dope-smoking-longhair. I know what I’ve done and still do and… well… FOAD if you don’t like hippies. Go join the Republicans. Hippies was just people and that generation did a bit better at many things than any generation previous.
Did I say FOAD yet?
And ditto to Jakob’s last comment, “Blame the bastards in power who made the laws, not the hippies.” It’s all water under the bridge, it is what is and it was what it was. Buck up and get over it.
Blaming the drug war, marijuana in particular, on hippies, is like blaming Al Quaeda for the invasion of Iraq. The war is bent on irrationality, driven by a holier-than-thou political ideology, in the name of the military industrial complex.
Harry Anslinger was STILL filling people’s heads with lies about the dangers of marijuana, DuPont and big alcohol were already HUGE lobbies in Washington. These forces were going to make sure the government had a problem with marijuana and industrial hemp. Hippies were a convienient scapegoat to keep the status quo going.
The only thing thing the hippies fostered was prevalence of experience with marijuana, and a questioning of our attitudes about it. You contend that the Schaffer Commission’s findings would not have been thrown in the trash if not for hippies??? Please, you give Nixon too much credit. If not for hippies, the Schaffer commission would not have been drawn up in the first place! The administration was not looking to reverse the downward of marijuana into infamy for any reason.
Blaming the hippies is illogical, you are becoming a victim of exactly what you despise and preach against. You resort to stereotype and hyperbole in defense of the indefensible.
That said, I agree 100% with this-
“I’ve seen many sell out and give up on their talent in order to pursue the picket fence and BMW…. It makes me sad about those who squandered a dream.”
What if they gave a post and nobody commented?
I completely disagree with BruceM.
However, I will contend that one of the main reasons why the republicans managed to get away with their fear-mongering propaganda campaign to “Just blame drugs” (and hippies) during the Carter administration (76 – 80) had much to do with a lack of defensive-posture and unwillingness to fight by the pacific, laid-back attitude projected by the Woodstock generation (mellowing out with the pot and music).
The ferocious fear-mongering of the right-wingers who hated leaving Vietnam with their tails between their legs was unpredictable, as it often is under similar circumstances. But no, it wasn’t the hippies fault;
it was a right-wing ruling-class plan by design and it was enacted by them, because those bastards are never happy losing a war, even when it is nothing more than a police-action.
@Voletear. Yeah, I was a little worried that people would have a hard time following the move over to the new location, but there’s been over 600 comments in less than a month, which makes me feel pretty good. There’s a really great group (and range) of readers, and they make excellent contributions to the site.
I conceded that drug criminalization existed before hippies, and I also conceded that most drug prohibitions were based on racism/xenophobia.
The people who are disagreeing with me are saying I said things much broader than what I said. I did not say but for hippies drugs would all be legal. I did not say hippies are the sole reason people fear drugs. Read exactly what I wrote and do not try to read between the lines or assume I mean something more than exactly what I said. Those who know me know that there’s no greater advocate for ending the drug war and legalizing everything than I am. I want drug trucks playing happy music to drive down the neighborhood street, stop by the playground, and sell heroin and cocaine to children. Put the ice cream man out of business. I want to be able to go into Costco and buy pure carfentanil by the pound.
Anyway… before hippies there were concerns over specific drugs. They’d focus on one particular drug (fears of which were instigated by racism), get some ass like Anslinger to perjure himself before Congress about that drug, and then ban it. Hippies caused the powers that be to not ban on a drug-by-drug basis but to say “all mind altering substances have to go.” Except alcohol of course.
Let me provide another analogy. Remember the congressional hearings they had about the dangers of comic books back in 1954? They said comic books were depraved and immoral, caused children to go crazy and commit crime, kill themselves and others, have deluded fantasies, become homosexuals, etc. Basically all the things they say about drugs and “voodoo pharmacology” … with comic books it was “voodoo literature.” A psychiatrist named Fredric Wertham was the Harry Anslinger of comic book opposition. He wrote a book blaming everything on comic books and Congress was more than happy to listen to him. And of course they’d get a parent to come testify about how her child committed suicide and they found comic books under his bed. Correlation always equals causation during a witch hunt.
Anyway, there was of course no real evidence that comic books were an actual danger. So comics were not banned, but they were censored for decades after those congressional hearings.
Now imagine what would have happened if a group of comic book fans (not all of them, mind you) walked around the streets dressed in rags or ran around naked, never washed or bathed, smelled like crap, dropped out of school, flaunted all social mores that existed at the time, proudly rebelled against all existing social structure, and… well acted like hippies – and doing so with comic books in their hands, proudly claiming to be acting under the influence of comic books.
The results of those congressional hearings on the dangers of comic books would have resulted in a complete and total ban on all comic books, and our prisons would likely be full of people convicted of sale/possession of comic books.
‘Hippies’ derives from the word ‘hip’, which first appeared in print in 1904 in reference to opium smokers who were often photographed smoking an opium pipe while reclining propped up on their hip and elbow. Elbowie would never have sounded right. Hip is better. The association of hippies with drugs continues.
Much of the negative feedback I encountered deep in the Bible Belt during the late 60s and early 70s came not from the Summer of Love or Woodstock, but from the squalor that happened afterwards in the Haight district of San Francisco when organized crime moved in to take advantage of naïve kids who had escaped from Bircher/McCarthyite enclaves in search of peace and love. The press seized on every ugly story they could find or concoct that had anything to do with some longhair burning out or running into trouble in the Haight.
Conservative organizations sent speakers around to grade schools (including mine) to give talks to young kids about how terrible and sinister the hippies were, equating them with rapists, etc. I remember seeing one of the forged SDS letters printed by COINTELPRO or the FBI, and designed to produce ridicule of the SDS. The document had an SDS letterhead and contained misspellings, bad grammar, and a call for students to drop out of school.
All liberal social movements in the 60s/70s tended to be lumped together by authoritarians who feared social discord and change. To them, hippies, yippies, SDS, Weathermen, Black Panthers, gays, lesbians, feminists, drug legalizers, and dissident college students marching in anti-war demonstrations were all the same threatening species.
Fear of the ‘other’ was the underlying reaction. It became obvious as I was marching with 1500 other Viet Nam anti-war demonstrators when we trooped through an enclosed shopping mall singing ‘We Shall Overcome’. Shopkeepers locked their shop doors and stood behind thick glass, their eyes wide with terror, as we peaceful demonstrators paraded through the hallways. Their reaction was both funny and sad at the same time.
Servetus is spot on. The notion that there was a single group “the hippies” who were laughing and parading around, flaunting their sexuality and destroying social mores, proclaiming their devout love of druuuuuuugs while not bathing and causing fear in all Americans, is totally ridiculous and the very product of government propaganda and brainwashing. There were many reasons people got involved in the liberal movement, whether it was to push for civil rights, anti-war, rebellion, love of music, or simply a want to really live before you die.
The government seized on the entire liberal movement and declared them “hippies”, an enemy of the state, the media obliged by printing ridiculous propaganda which ascribed any crime by a “long-hair” as evidence of sinister hippy evil. They reached out to parents the same way conservatives are now deriding health care, no facts, no truth, just fearmongering and propaganda. If it weren’t the “hippies” who ruined it for legalization, it would have been whatever other label the powers that be ascribed to progressive social movements of the time.
Their rebellion was NECESSARY, their rebellion was GOOD, and only through propaganda and fearmongering did the powers that be brainwash America into believing that it was bad, ofcourse since it threatened their very authority. It is just too bad that it worked so well that they actually brainwashed the liberals themselves into believing that they were evil and corporate slavery was their only salvation. And the few that remained true were so cynical and dejected by government and ultimate failure, that there was no way to keep faith in any “movement”.
Exactly what Servetus and permanentilt said. BruceM is simply another product of the 80s who has drank the corporate koolaid and buys it all with no absolute evidence to prove it real.
If you’re looking for someone other than the government to blame, take a closer look at the black-market dealers. They’re the ones that pushed all the hard drugs like candy for profit, they’re the ones that flaunted drug-use and abuse, and they are the ones that exploited the opportunity to turn so many young people into addicts. But all that is a byproduct of the drug war, not the Woodstock generation.
Ok I think the whacky right are pissed off becaus the hippys were right about so many thing way back when. You know such things as alternative fuels enviromental degradation and of the enviroment world over populaion and of courde corporate greed.
Silly me I think too much Oh btw what ever happened to ZPG[zero population growth]
The hippies were right! And they still are! The fascists are, well, fascists. Fuck them.
I’m truly surprised that anyone here would disagree with me about hippies. It seems those who disagree do so on the basis of the message of the hippies. Peace and love versus corporations and war. Yes, I agree peace and love are better. That’s not the damn point (it’s also a false dichotomy). My beef with hippies is not their message or what they believed in, but how they acted with respect to drugs and their usage of drugs. And their actions were completely voluntary.
Yes there are lots of people to blame for the disaster that is drug prohibition. It’s a long list. But since we’re talking about hippies, I’m damn well going to point out that they deserve a big chunk of that blame. If hippies had never existed, our drug laws would be very different.
“…we condemned them, our children,
for seeking a different future.
We hated them for their flowers, for their love,
and for their unmistakeable rejection of every hideous,
mistaken compromise that we had made
throughout our hollow, money-bitten, frightened, adult lives.”

I blame the extreme extent of drug prohibition entirely on hippies.
… hippies and their flaunting of drug use while simultaneously pissing on everything society at the time considered sacred was more than enough the turn the masses against drugs.
They made it too easy to make drugs the universal scapegoat for everything the status quo was worried about during such rapidly changing times.
Let me sum up my point by saying this: “drugs are dangerous and must all be seriously banned†was an extremely logical, rational response to what the hippies were doing (proudly and openly using drugs while doing it).
There would not be a Controlled Substances Act if there had not been hippies.
I’m truly surprised that anyone here would disagree with me about hippies.

Poverty? Dubya Says Blame the Hippies! 12/02/03
In December 1971, John Lennon sang at an Ann Arbor, Mich., concert calling for the release of a man who had been given 10 years in prison for possessing two marijuana cigarettes. The song he wrote for the occasion, “John Sinclair,†was remarkably effective. Within days, the Michigan Supreme Court ordered Mr. Sinclair released.
“You know, it’s a funny thing, every one of the bastards that are out for legalizing marijuana is Jewish. What the Christ is the matter with the Jews, Bob?
“You’re enough of a pro,” Nixon tells Shafer, “to know that for you to come out with something that would run counter to what the Congress feels and what the country feels, and what we’re planning to do, would make your commission just look bad as hell.”
– Richard Milhouse Nixon
“Marijuana does not lead to physical dependency, although some evidence indicates that the heavy, long-term users may develop a psychological dependence on the drug”
~ The Shafer Commission of 1970
One more time, Nixon lied. Really, he did.
Throughout 1971 Nixon kept up the drumbeat. “I want a Goddamn strong statement on marijuana,” he told his high-level White House lieutenant Bob Haldeman, “I mean one that just tears the ass out of them.” Somehow, it’s not surprising to hear the President say, “You know, it’s a funny thing, every one of the bastards that are out for legalizing marijuana is Jewish.”
On March 21, 1972, the president told Haldeman, “We need — and I use the word — ‘all out war.'” The next day the Shafer Commission returned its report on marijuana and to the President’s chagrin, not only did they refuse to declare war on marijuana, they recommended decriminalization.
Nixon declared his war on drugs anyway. Needless to say, Gov. Shafer did not get his judicial appointment and his voluminous report was swept under the rug.
~ Outside View: Nixon Tapes Pot Shocker
I overly stated my case, just enjoy rants I reckon. Nixon lied about Ganja while the world watched Watergateway to D.E.A.th red herrings. I’d love to be more honest in resting my case, but Pete ask that we retain civility. I think tact is nice, but never precise. Like political correctness, ConPromising or blaming a group for countering the actions of greedy barbarians killing kids, poisoning crops, sabotaging, gossiping, stigmatizing and allowing the tax payer to pay for it. If that is what you hold sacred. Your hate causes cancer. Careful.
I, and many others were getting cancer and early AIDs patients Ganja in the early 80’s. Many non gay Haitian farm-workers were being “treated” in central Florida. During the dark ages of Rayguns Boosh no less. Then the politically correct and desperate started the appeasement’s and drastic search for any alternative. By the 90’s Klintoon was pushing Thalidomide as an appetite stimulus package. Flipper babies are all too soon forgotten. Act Up started ranting like log cabin republickers, bashing and blaming “Hippies”, same “Hippies” as before getting them “meds”, but now on the wrong side of politics. Now the big brother protesters were becoming snitches for big brother. Fearful of themselves and plastic as a credit card. Sell Out, Suck Up and Shame based cowardice. Must Punish… tsk tsk tsk.
Self Perpetuating Lies
Nixon’s Ganjawar has always been about manipulation and abuse of power, much more dangerous than abusing drugs. You can’t abuse Ganja to the point of overdosing let alone wiping out the spirit of the country as the Banksters and Politikops have done. From Pat Boone types of whitewashing rock and roll, the powers scapegoated the “Hippies” and naive twits have followed along like puppies wagging their tails. Pitifuckingful to witness full growd Americans acting like puppies. Keep having to swat their noses with a newspaper and that only reinforces their lower self esteem, to continue unacceptable behavior, shitting on carpets or carpet bombing civilians and caging puppies or sick and healthy toking citizens only profiting the cage makers.

The Ganjawar keeps natural products off the trade market, period. No other reason for Nexxon to include RxGanja and Hemp or to continue outlawing Re-Creational use on false premises. If its prohibited, then we the people are forced to buy what’s available. Dead trees, crude oil and cotton using 90 million pounds of poisons not used on Hemp. All replaced by hemp if Nixon the Cowardly Liar let his own Science bare the facts. Same with many inebriating Pharmaceuticals and Booze corporations not having the problem of competition. So appeasers willing to forget the reality of Standard Oil and Vietnam or Al Gore Oil in Colombia or Boosh Oil in the Middle East. Henry Kissenger and Boosh CIA, MKULTRA, COINTELPRO and Dyncorps gathering propaganda info or Black Water assassinations. Same press “programming” the news so the unknowing can stay in their comfortable darkness. Whirled Peas is the goal of the bloody Neocons. Chaos dividing the masses, herding them barefoot down a path of glass, selling Band-Aids.
Never a word about prohibitionist abortions.
I guess Bruce blames the Jews for pissing off Hitler into bombing London. And those African Americans starting the civil war and burning down Atlanta. Or those stubborn Indians not willing to assimilate. tsk tsk, pity the gullible fools for they know not a damn thing of what they say or do, but say and do it anyway. “Hippies” and their kids are educated in safer sex and safer substances, and only ignorant neo cons buy schwagg and adulterated ditchweed, go figer. Or ajax white powders, and blotched abortions, harming themselves and then demanding everybody abstain. Only reason for Ganja “law” is for unconnected users, same “hippie” bashers. Same idiots protesting against clean water because Massa Monsanto says so, because “Hippies” are environmentally concerned? “Routine Assholiness” cutting off their brownnoses to spite their two faces.
Throwing out the baby with the bath-water, including the tub and plumbing. Cramming fat and beer til their bodies bloat out then outlaw nudity because of their own damn shame. Spouting clean air takes jobs from polluters or burying Ganja tumor research, monopolies on research materials, 404 censorship rules or mandatory sentences bought by the NRA, 95% now cop to plea bargains, pisstastes and probation rather than face a jury under orders to exclude reality. 3 stripes. Like snitches provide 80% of the cops Ganja cases. Letting out drunk drivers if they can get a Steve Kubby busted. Or blackmailing Tommy Chong into copping a guilty plea while Rushogbo doctor shops hillbilly heroin and still spouts hatred over public airwaves. Its the fashion and suits snorting coke. Models and meth and truckers black beauties and white crosses, stake outs and interns on 36 hour shifts. Future politiconarks college exam cramming on white crosses and mothers lil pick me up, like the man said what the “Hippies” said… Speed Kills. Then some “sleep aids” so rooster hallucinations don’t keep you awake. Or talking rabbits stealing sugared cereal from kids over-medicating on trix. Hardick pills and everything sold spends 3/4th of the commercial reading side effects. Yup “Hippies” warning us about Big Pharma. Pushing drugs, not a public service to those wanting it like the “Hippies”.

But police actions pay, Iraq or on Ganja users. I find it hard to come up with a greater coward than a drug worrier, hippie bashers are pretty weak though. Do they steal candy from kids too? Must have loved the stories about how the Klu Klux Klan would kill “longhairs” in the south. Or the pigs beating them for peaceful protest. How about those environmentalists teenage girls Bruce fears so much, dropping liquid pepper spray in her pried opened eyes for wanting to save the redwoods at Headwaters. Like lemming tea-bags protesting the protesters. Working for AIG, just not getting the kickbacks.

Yes all ye lucie goosies not seeing the cheating, lying and devastation caused by the tax paid Ganjawar and those brokering it are sticking out like a sore thumb and scores and even dare I say gads of people are rethinking who to blame. One last bit of gossip to kill. The concept behind “dirty Hippies”, as the moniker itself. Was a product of the media. Hipsters leaning on their hips while smoking hookah’s, being hep. Probably had some influence, but the original term was a silly acronym. The “dirty” part came not from not bathing. Although hitchhiking and living outdoors is never as clean as indoors. The concept was against covering your body with unhealthy chemicals to mask natural odors. Right Guard was a major war broker cheerleader that existed on phony unnatural unhealthy smells. To cover up what Nature has provided.
Natural dirt washes off with water, its the unNatural crude based dirt needing abrasives and chemicals. Some individuals went over board and on the road it was easier to travel light so the same clothes were worn more often and for longer periods. Holes in jeans became artwork or patchwork billboards with a message, same as magic markers led to air brushed tee shirts. Tye dye is an ancient Eastern tradition. Any tradition bilked onto the public by advertisers and fascist manufacturing was rejected. Including banning free speech of college students or fake cardboard foods and pseudo entertainment, sanitized with nonsense and pretty, cosmetically altered speakers. Get Real, its nice once you get used to it and get over the blind allegiance. “Because I said so, wasn’t a good enough answer anymore. Did the Ganja cause the Questioning? It seems to have that effect through History. A beaucoup thorn in the side of those profiting and dependent on the use of herd mentalities.

Same as the unnatural police actions, “Wars” not declared by Congress. Police actions are legal profits, wars are not. So the entire hippie bashing only illuminates the cowardly acts and whimpers of the greed misters. It shows as clearly as the internet has exposed the drug worriers. Fascism, as with the Ganjawar, only profits in its perpetuation. Not zero tolerance or legalizing. Those spewing mouthfarts and dung only show how desperate they are. Like common bullies and tyrants. Its the only game they got.
The Hell of War Comes Home
I’m proud to be associated with the “Hippies” and you can take them ole Neanderthal teabagged knuckle dragging Okies from Muskogee, wrapped in their plastic Iraqi crude oil flags back to Hell Whenceforth they came. Education depravation and a willingness to serve ignorance for pay, that ain’t America and those who think it is don’t think period. Marky kLIEman makes a living baking strawman cookies to feed the pseudo intelectual puppets in government and board rooms. Weak and Naive is the only thing on his resume.

Where does this mentality come from? Clean air and water is not a threat, in spite of Lush Rimjob oxycontin hissyfits. You tough guys attacking peaceniks? For daring to question a Police Action for profit? Or Cliarence Thomas fighting so hard for Monsanto’s right to dump dioxins into the Mississippi river. Chernobyl? Or Palin selling out Alaskans to Exxon, still bartering for less than a penny on the dollar of the actual tax paid cost of their Valsleeze fuck up.
Everyone of your Fortune 700 Club Corporate gods stashing tax money in Cayman shelters is laughing at every worker having to make it up. Real brave blaming the poor and not a peep about the International World Banksters getting a trillion dollar bailout, and then getting hundreds of billions of tax dollars in yearly interest on loans to the government. Marijuana Tax Act
Leary v. United States, 395 U.S. 6 (1969)
Well I admit I was shocked at first, the idea that the hippies were responsible for ‘everything’ being illegal, but putting aside my bias in favor of hippies I’ve got to admit there’s a good argument in favor of this position. It so often is referred to as ‘Nixon’s war on drugs’ and while it is accurate that he started it, it’s untrue that it was taken seriously in the years immediately subsequent to his tenure as POTUS. I graduated from high school in 1978, and reality was in that year WOD meant ‘we’re on drugs’ not ‘war on drugs’. It wasn’t until Mr. Reagan assumed power in the early ’80s that the ‘war on drugs’ gained traction. And Mr. Reagan’s animosity to drugs can be traced directly to his tenure as governor of CA in the 1960s. Mr. Nixon may have started it, but without Reagan’s impetus the phrase ‘war on drugs’ would likely be long forgotten by now.
Just the fact that the hippies brought about a lot of good doesn’t mean their ‘in your face’ drug use didn’t contribute directly to today’s extreme drugs policy. How do we explain Ibogaine being put on schedule 1 so quickly? There’s like one guy (Dana Beal) in the entire country who promotes it, and does so as a cure for addiction. But it gets you high, so it has to go on schedule 1, no? Then again it’s kind of peculiar that Salvia Divinorum hasn’t been placed on schedule 1, and is still legal in most states. The fact that it has remained legal in so many places and Federally does not support the argument above.
Have you seen the little piggies
Crawling in the dirt?
And for all the little piggies
Life is getting worse,
Always having dirt
To play around in.
Have you seen the bigger piggies
In their starched white shirts?
You will find the bigger piggies
Stirring up the dirt,
Always have clean shirts
To play around in.
In their sties, with all their backing,
They don’t care what goes on around.
In their eyes, there’s something lacking;
What they need’s a damn good whacking!
Everywhere there’s lots of piggies,
Living piggy lives.
You can see them out for dinner
With their piggy wives,
Clutching forks and knives
To eat their bacon.

Where are the old hippies?
Have you been to an antiwar rally? All old hipoies.
Have you been to a healthcare forum? All old hippies.
The question isn’t where are the old hippies, the question is where the f**k are the rest of you?
The hippie generation started every great debate of our time; peace, ecology, human right, civil rights, woman’s rights, spiritual awakenings, individual freedoms.

Fucking……………Hippies……Damn Dirty Hippies. The real alternative thinkers are the ones who don’t flaunt it. I know people who wear a suit everyday who have better ideas and know more about perspective, history and how the world should really run than you stupid, fucking……….hippies.
Fucking jon dirty fucking jons in this world! Selling whores. Flaunting their ignorance. Another teabog ditzo for lush rimmjob I suppose. Fucking jon maggots bashing peaceful hippie folks! Go back to the sewers you punk!
Come you masters of war
You that build all the guns
You that build the death planes
You that build the big bombs
You that hide behind walls
You that hide behind desks
I just want you to know
I can see through your masks
You that never done nothin’
But build to destroy
You play with my world
Like it’s your little toy
You put a gun in my hand
And you hide from my eyes
And you turn and run farther
When the fast bullets fly
Like Judas of old
You lie and deceive
A world war can be won
You want me to believe
But I see through your eyes
And I see through your brain
Like I see through the water
That runs down my drain
You fasten the triggers
For the others to fire
Then you set back and watch
When the death count gets higher
You hide in your mansion
As young people’s blood
Flows out of their bodies
And is buried in the mud
You’ve thrown the worst fear
That can ever be hurled
Fear to bring children
Into the world
For threatening my baby
Unborn and unnamed
You ain’t worth the blood
That runs in your veins
How much do I know
To talk out of turn
You might say that I’m young
You might say I’m unlearned
But there’s one thing I know
Though I’m younger than you
Even Jesus would never
Forgive what you do
Let me ask you one question
Is your money that good
Will it buy you forgiveness
Do you think that it could
I think you will find
When your death takes its toll
All the money you made
Will never buy back your soul
And I hope that you die
And your death’ll come soon
I will follow your casket
In the pale afternoon
And I’ll watch while you’re lowered
Down to your deathbed
And I’ll stand o’er your grave
‘Til I’m sure that you’re dead
Dylan
I appreciate the post itself and while the comments have been interesting, to say the least, I have to say the following. Out of context, incoherent comments with links (some broken) which point to out of context, ranting, incoherent, badly sourced and broken media tend to reinforce a certain, shall we say, stereotype about the people who have vested interest in the issues surrounding prohibition. Ok, I know, this site is called drug war rant but the articles aren’t really off puttingly ranty.
Anyway, it’s really easy to lay blame on or exonerate the hippies completely – or the wider encompassing generation that contained them – for the decisions of the recent past but the future belongs to those who can coherently, passionately and proactively address the situational system. And these people are of all ages, types and creeds. It’s not just a democrat/republican thing. Or capitalist vrs. whatever. It’s the writers, the politicians, the reporters, the advocates, the community organizers, the farmers, the industrialists, the futurists, the venture capitalists, the professionals, the technicians, the media savvy and the business people and entrepreneurs who are not only involved in the issues but can articulate what they are as well as articulate and prove potential, reasonable and viable solutions to “outsiders.” And I’m still one of those despite years of interest in the issues.
The thing is, until it’s figured out by the majority that they don’t have to agree with someone else 100% of the time on all existing issues and that despite some deep seated disagreements and even resentment they can still work together, the abuses to everyday people will go on.
