The People Who Profit from Marijuana Prohibition are Upset with the DOJ

SAM sends a letter to the DOJ: Re: State Laws Legalizing Marijuana

We represent tens of thousands of people working in drug prevention, drug and mental health treatment, medicine, criminal justice reform, and millions of individuals and families in recovery from alcohol and drug dependence.

Right.

And, of course, it’s signed by a Who’s Who of people who profit from marijuana prohibition. Patrick Kennedy, Kevin Sabet, Peter Bensinger, Robert DuPont, Calvina Fay, Howard Meitiner, Steven J. Pasierb, Betty Sembler, and some others in the treatment industry.

From the creators of American Drug War and How Weed Won the West, comes their most compelling documentary to date — and the other ones were damn good. Aside from a few relevant clips from the excellent original American Drug War film, “American Drug War 2: Cannabis Destiny” is packed with completely fresh material, woven and spliced together to form perhaps the most cohesive and compelling documentary argument yet to display why we must shut down the War on Drugs once and for all — now.

Award-winning director Kevin Booth spent seven years making American Drug War 2, which required massive amounts of research, and time to follow stories that unfold in the film. The information given is gripping as it is timely and urgent, a film that’s a must-watch for every member of the anti-Drug War choir.

“This new film is mostly based on children,” Booth said on The Alex Jones Show online. But the children affected severely by the Drug War aren’t just here in the U.S. Booth took his crew and two New York Times journalists to Juarez, Mexico, where cartels and drug trafficking rule the roost. Boys of 14 are recruited to murder for the cartels’ causes, while a few brave activists fight against them in a procession of martyrdom. Booth also tells the story of the journey he and his wife took through the U.S. foster care system, where children are given high doses of legal speed in the morning and barbiturates at night, antipsychotics at the drop of a hat, and are blatantly and willfully kept in the system and away from their families for as long as possible, often to their detriment.

Look forward to interviews with cannabis activist and fugitive Rick Simpson, Dr. Donald Abrams, SSDP founder Aaron Houston and many more. See this masterpiece for yourself.

…and every 12 stepper that actually follows the program will proactively disclaim support for either side of the issue.

      • Jean Valjean says:

Yes. La Barthwell was sent out as a “missionary” to NA to try to get their support in furthering the drug war, not to mention the profits of her employers at Sativex. Not sure that she was very successful although I’m sure some relative newcomers like Patrick Kennedy fell for the bait. It seems that the longer a recovering addict is around the less black and white they are on this issue. I have had arguments with newer members about ending prohibition and they are often strongly opposed, but when I ask them if a prison term and criminal record would have helped their recovery they tend to change their minds. In my opinion Kennedy is not bright enough to see how he is being used by Sabet and co.

  15. Rick Steeb says:

The egotistical perpetrators of that presumptuous screed are ostensibly oblivious to three relevant facts:

    (1) Tobacco and alcohol are both legal and ubiquitous in this country.

(2)Cannabis is far safer than either of those two substances.

(3)To keep the non-toxic alternative illegal is causing lethal harm to those smokers and drinkers who would switch or reduce their use of the toxic substances if cannabis was available legally [and generates coerced profits for most of the document’s 3 1/2 pages of ostentatious signatories].

    And from the SAM letter;

“We now know that regular marijuana use not only produces
addiction, but it is significantly linked with reduced IQ later in life.”

    No, we DON’T know this.

    From this article months ago;

    http://tinyurl.com/ny9vqwu

    Excerpts;

“Remember the study that came out last year, researched in part by Duke University, which claimed that smoking marijuana in your teens leads to a long-term drop in IQ? It won blanket coverage at the time—but a new analysis is now crying foul.”

    -and-

“The new paper, published by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, examines that research and finds its methodology to be flawed. Socioeconomic differences among study participants in terms of education level, occupation and income weren’t taken into account, says Ole Rogenberg of the Ragnar Frisch Center for Economic Research in Oslo. These factors could, according to Rogenberg, have influenced the participants’ varying IQs. His paper, based on on a computer simulation, traced what would happen to IQ scores over time if they were affected by socioeconomic factors (as suggested by other research), but not by smoking marijuana. He found that the patterns closely resembled those found by the pot-centric Duke study. This, says Rogenberg, suggests that the researchers of the initial study should have analyzed their results more thoroughly before jumping to conclusions. Dr. Norma Volkow, director of the less-than-progressive National Institute on Drug Abuse, grudgingly admits that Rogenberg’s findings “look sound”—though she points out that socioeconomic factors aren’t yet proven to be the cause of the IQ variations, any more than marijuana use is.”

Must have been tough for Cruella Deville Norma Volkow, through clenched teeth, to utter the words “look sound” regarding Rogenberg’s findings. Really tough.

    • N.T. Greene says:

I am hardly a scientific researcher myself, but I remember calling logical fallacy all over that. If just because you CAN’T adequately control for socioeconomic factors, individual IQ differences, receptiveness to education… In other words, I don’t think a scientific study is even -possible- in this area.

Not that I believed the results for a moment, seeing as we all know a couple guys that smoke quite a lot and yet are -more- functional for it.

      • Duncan20903 says:

        .
        .

I don’t even have to go further than to point out that IQ tests circa 1973 weren’t known for their accuracy. Perhaps if the New Zealand “scientists” had used the same IQ tests throughout the study the results might be a little bit respectable.

Don’t forget that study also found no decline in IQ among subjects who were over age 18 at the time they first chose to enjoy cannabis. Couple that with the easily proven even though widely disbelieved assertion that age limits at point of sale are effective at keeping substances out of the hands of kiddies and that study supports arguments for regulated re-legalization.

        • N.T. Greene says:

That’s one of my favorite cards to play with people. “Oh, if we legalized marijuana, kids would have an easier time getting it!”

…actually, it would probably be the opposite, as age restrictions are tied to reductions in youth access to alcohol and tobacco. It isn’t like we don’t already have data on this — we do. And the data strongly supports our position.

“Drug dealers don’t ID” is a mantra worth remembering.

“Drug dealers don’t ID” is a mantra worth remembering.

Truly… among MAP’s letter writers, that truly is and long has been a mantra. Funny how writing the same thing differently thousands of times has the effect of sharpening points.

Dozens of people writing and re-writing over and over our talking points and spreading them into the nation’s opinion pages was – imo – one of the key counter-assaults to the drug war’s decades long propaganda offensive.

It was a move that the prohibitionists could not stop and could only counter by having to do their own writings in response. But they were few (and fewer yet today) and with their short legs and torturously uptight pants (Globbner’s disease) they couldn’t keep up with the amotivationals.

That I, a low-life, tree hugging dope head hippie got to head slap Lee Dogoloff on the pages of the Wall Street Journal has to have old Ben Franklin smilin’…

And one of these years… some bright researcher studying the history of the drug policy reform movement will discover that Mark Greer and Matt Elrod and their band of oh-so merry men and women (Rich Lake, Jo-D, JayB, Kirk, Robert, et al) silently and humbly began the first real dismantling of the wod wall.

MAP and DrugSense still continue on, quietly and humbly and with an underpaid staff and basically the same volunteer editors and newshawks since the early days. DrugSense hosts too many email lists to count and was a vital resource for LEAP at it’s beginnings.

Even when presented with compelling evidence reality is a tough sell because it’s so counter-intuitive. It’s almost never smart to post supporting evidence from a friendly site. I’ve never heard of NORML getting caught red handed lying. IMO Rob Kampia is a slimeball but he’s still a very effective cannabis law reform advocate. Also I’m not aware of MPP or any other cannabis law reform advocacy group getting caught knowingly disseminating a lie. It doesn’t matter, the sycophants of prohibition think that having an agenda means that their info is tainted. I think if NORML were to post on their website that 2+2=4 that the sycophants would say that it’s unreliable “stoner” math.

Teen Marijuana Use Up, Drinking Down

The latest nation-wide survey of drinking and drug use among teenagers in the U.S. finds marijuana use at a 30 year high while those drinking alcohol has dropped to a 30 year low.

The survey for the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) is based on 47,000 students in the eighth, tenth, and twelfth grades and was conducted by the Surey Research Center of the University of Michigan.

The number of high school seniors who smoke pot on a daily or near daily basis (one of every 15) is the highest in 30 years. Similar increases were found among younger teens as well.
          /snip/

Even more stunning is the fact that teen use of cannabis is at 30 year highs without any help from even a single State which has adopted a medicinal cannabis patient protection law. It’s just plain amazing that anyone can look at the data and turn around and play the cheeeeel-dren card. But you know what? Ever so slowly, bit by bit, inch by inch people are figuring it out.

Drinking Alcohol, Smoking Tobacco, and Drug Use among U.S. and European Teens Compared

An average of 57% of teens in the 36 European countries drank alcohol in the previous 30 days whereas only 27% of U.S. students reported consuming alcohol in the same period of time. Only in one country (Iceland) was the rate lower than in the U.S.

Although 28% of European teens reported smoking cigarettes in the previous 30 days, only 12% of U.S. teens smoked. In every country except Iceland, a higher proportion of Europeans teens smoked cigarettes.
          /snip/

We don’t need to tell any steeenking lies like the prohibasites do.

  17. Servetus says:

More on Project SAM and intelligence testing, SAM pushes IQ testing as a weapon for condemning adolescent marijuana use, with the apparent objective being to challenge the entire panoply of adult marijuana use. For reference, the following desribes the Duke IQ study SAM refers to:

“Among a long-range study cohort of more than 1,000 New Zealanders, individuals who started using cannabis in adolescence and used it for years afterward showed an average decline in IQ of 8 points when their age 13 and age 38 IQ tests were compared.”
    http://tinyurl.com/llzskpj

The Duke University study on New Zealanders appears to contradict other pot and drug based IQ studies, in particular, the following British Study:

“A high childhood IQ may be linked to subsequent illegal drug use, particularly among women, suggests research published online in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health.”
    http://tinyurl.com/mlewhth

Using IQ in research studies on drug consumption is highly problematic, since intelligence testing is culturally and socioeconomically affected, and notoriously inaccurate:

“After conducting the largest online intelligence study on record, a Western University-led research team [Canada] has concluded that the notion of measuring one’s intelligence quotient or IQ by a singular, standardized test is highly misleading.”
    http://tinyurl.com/m45zw43

And an article at Salon by Scott Barry Kaufman dumps more dirt on the concept of universal IQ testing methods:

”IQ tests hurt kids, schools — and don’t measure intelligence:

The research proves that IQ tests poorly predict learning disabilities. So why are schools still using them?”
    http://tinyurl.com/kfaf569

So why are SAM prohibitionists still flaunting IQ tests? Perhaps SAM members should monitor their own IQs instead.

  18. NorCalNative says:

Instead of feeling sorry for the tens of thousands of jobs that will be lost, I’d prefer to consider the MILLIONS who will benefit from legal cannabis.

    Why? CANNABINOIDS KILL CANCER.

So, feel sorry for folks who entered a career without a FUTURE, or, feel sorry for the people forced to suffer at the hands of the medical industry in their battle against cancer?

Whether these folks (idiots?) know it or not, they’re part of an effort to keep a CURE FOR CANCER from being accessed by the people right NOW.

In the future we’ll have our cannabinoid-based medicines for curing cancer, but that’s decades down the road. However, today people are using a full extract cannabis oil, a.k.a. Rick Simpson Oil to cure their own cancer.

This is no joke, there’s no quackery or snake oil for sale here, just simple plain facts:

Cannabinoids kill cancer by keeping mutating cells from reproducing (ANTI-PROLIFERATIVE).

Cannabinoids kill cancer by preventing the formation of new blood vessels to the tumor (ANTI-ANGIOGENIC).

Cannabinoids kill cancer by inducing the mutating cancer cells to DIE as a normal cell would (APOPTOSIS)

Cannabinoids stop the spreading, or metastasis that causes 90% of cancer-related deaths (ANTI-METASTATIC).

Use any of those capitalized words as a search and begin your own journey on discovering that you don’t have to die (as early) or suffer needlessly from cancer.

As an indication of how fucked up prohibition is, medical professionals who SHOULD KNOW BETTER continue to place themselves and family members into what can only be considered MEDICAL-INDUCED TORTURE if and when they use current medical treatments for cancer.

Modern medicine has ONE TRICK for fighting cancer only. Chemotherapy and radiation is ANTI-PROLIFERATIVE, but at extreme cost to patients in terms of suffering.

So, the people who profit from prohibition are PARTIALLY responsible for this medical insanity and suffering.

It’s NOT just the tens of thousands of rehab fucks that could lose their livelihoods. If we used cannabis extract oil to replace chemotherapy and radiation we’re talking about eliminating many of the jobs and profits of the $200 billion cancer INDUSTRY ALONE.

What kind of people allow their government to poison them for profit? Cancer is a profitable business! More disease equals more profits. Time to end that poisonous gravy train!

I’m not worried about anybody here having their head explode from the idea that world-wide, governments are withholding the cure for cancer. Readers here know how messed up prohibition is.

But one things for sure: You (the government) can’t go from saying NO MEDICAL USE to CANNABIS CURES CANCER without the normal straight folks going nuts.

The Kevin Sabet’s of the world are fucking up the people’s chance at curing cancer. I don’t give a fuck about their jobs if they are part of the problem keeping cannabis-based medicines from becoming standard medical care.

First Do No Harm. If only the cancer industry took that to heart. Maybe it’s time to wonder if they even have one.

  19. NorCalNative says:

Some of you may be aware of Chong of “Cheech and Chong” recently used the Rick Simpson oil for his prostate cancer. He had great success in the beginning and he thought he had beat it, but it came back.

It’s possible that getting back on the oil may cure Tommy’s prostate cancer, but it’s important here to note that while it’s true that cannabinoids kill cancer cells it may not be a 100% cure for everyone.

Some people may need to combine the oil with the traditional therapies and there may be people who will not benefit at all. But, since the LD50 of cannabis doesn’t exist at the very least folks should have this option FIRST.

It’s easy to get swept up in the euphoria of the idea cannabinoids cure cancer because it’s TRUE. But, I think it may be misleading to expect or assume EVERY cancer can be beat.

What I do know is that the dose for folks without chemotherapy or radiation is 55-to-60 grams of the oil and it can be three times that for folks who have had chemotherapy and radiation.

Cost wise, a 55-to-60 gram dose is around $1,000. For the extended treatment it’s closer to 3,000. That’s incredibly cheap compared to tradition therapies that don’t even work.

Knowledge of the consequences plus willingness to continue said design that creates consequences equals intent. It would not be illegal to execute or imprison anyone who doesn’t give up on Marijuana prohibition. Marijuana prohibition obviously funded the Boston Bombings, which is treason. The same goes for the rest of the CSA, which is known to create drug money and drug money is known to fund crime and terrorism and the CSA obviously influences the rest of the World’s drug prohibitions (added to the fact the DEA jump on –what is it? A hundred plus countries). The NYC WTC Bombing of 93’, Beirut Barracks Bombings, U.S.S. Cole and U.S. Embassy Bombings in Kenya and Tanzania simply means that the DEA and other Drug Warriors obviously plotted and planned and co-conspired 9/11, the War on Terror, European/Philippine/Indian/Russian/2008 Olympics attacks and Benghazi etc via the CSA laws and the fact they knew about the consequences based from past attacks involving drug money.
