What about the children?

So, one of the big pieces of recent news was this:

Teen Marijuana Use Not Linked to Later Depression, Lung Cancer, Other Health Problems, Research Finds

Chronic marijuana use by teenage boys does not appear to be linked to later physical or mental health issues such as depression, psychotic symptoms or asthma, according to a study published by the American Psychological Association.

Researchers from the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and Rutgers University tracked 408 males from adolescence into their mid-30s for the study, which was published in Psychology of Addictive Behaviors®.

“What we found was a little surprising,” said lead researcher Jordan Bechtold, PhD, a psychology research fellow at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. “There were no differences in any of the mental or physical health outcomes that we measured regardless of the amount or frequency of marijuana used during adolescence.”

This, of course, is the best kind of research, as it actually tracked young people over the course of many years, and controlled for other factors such as cigarette smoking, health insurance, etc. (Note: in this particular study, only boys were tracked.)

For years, now, the federal government, led by science-impaired NIDA, plus all the prohibitionists, have claimed that we can’t consider legalizing marijuana for adults because it will inevitably mean more use by teens, leading to all sorts of damage.

Of course the actual truth is that there is no evidence that legalization for adults results in increased use by teens, and now this study shows that the purported dangers of teen use are dramatically overstated.

The same thing happened with the Chicken Little claims of highways devastated by stoned drivers.

Of course, as some of our commenters have pointed out, this is no surprise to us.

It’s just another variant of “where are the bodies?”

Teens have been smoking pot for a very long time, and there should be hard and obvious evidence of the negative impact by now, if the danger was anywhere near what was claimed.

Oh, and by the way, here’s the amazing thing — the Daily Mail actually covered this!

This must be what it was like for slaves outside of Confederate states who weren’t freed by Lincoln and the war powers act. Not until Congress finally got around to it in the 1880’s or so. They actually brought back runaways. So now we know. Plus we know they know. Yet the Lynch mob of justice will continue to act as if we are not free until Congress deems it so. Kids will still die and parents will still lose their houses to forfeiture and jails will stay full.

Kids in Uncivilized areas will continue having seizures. Organs will be denied and college bound kids will be rejected for tuition assistance. A trillion dollars in taxes was stolen by Nora and NIDA and another will be stolen in the name of protecting the kids. So now the Daily Mauled can re-write their own past pseudo science and stop persecuting people. ah ha…

After 8,000 years of medical and recreational use by humans, no one has yet to find anything significantly wrong with marijuana, or hashish. This should be a hint, or a question that’s applicable to inductive logic.

The anti-hedonist crowd hate pot—but they suck anyway; authoritarian twits, no sense of humor, and so forth. Religionists suck as well, those who see drug experiences competing with their own schtick. Politicians hate it because they think pot causes people to lose respect for authority. They’re absolutely correct—but it’s their own nefarious doings that result in disrespect. Respect is earned, not ordained.

The lack of physical and mental damage from marijuana is overwhelming, so it becomes necessary to manufacture a false toxicology—enter the NIDA.

Eighty centuries is a long time. Long enough to co-evolve with a plant, or at least become symbiotic with it in some way. The popularity of marijuana cannabinoids and terpenoids is evidence the chemicals provide a supplemental benefit to anandamide, the body’s own cannabinoid. Whereas anandamide is mere Chopsticks, the complete cannabinoid spectrum gives us Mozart’s Piano Sonata in C. People might have heard the music sooner, had not prohibition intervened.

PROPAGANDA ALERT: NIDA researchers are willing to do or say anything to give their marijuana studies a negative spin. In this case, it’s the UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH SCHOOLS OF THE HEALTH SCIENCES that wants us to believe that “Places with more marijuana dispensaries have more marijuana-related hospitalizations”.

What’s a marijuana related hospitalization? According to the researchers, it’s anything you think it is, as long as it’s considered “abuse or dependence of marijuana”:

Aug. 10, 2015 — Dr. Mair and her team looked at data on California hospital discharges that had either a primary or secondary medical code for marijuana dependence or abuse with at least one overnight hospital stay. The research covered 2001 through 2012, the most recent years for which consistent data were available.

Hospitalizations with marijuana abuse or dependence codes increased from 17,469 in 2001 to 68,408 in 2012. More than 85 percent of marijuana-related hospitalizations were coded as abuse, rather than dependence, and 99.2 percent were secondary codes, meaning the person was primarily hospitalized for something other than marijuana.

When the research team mapped the location of marijuana dispensaries and cross-referenced it with the ZIP code of each patient’s home, they found that each additional dispensary per square mile in a ZIP code was associated with a 6.8 percent increase in the number of hospitalizations linked to marijuana abuse and dependence.

Apparently, the NIDA considers any kind of marijuana consumption to be “drug abuse”, including medical use. The increasing legality of marijuana in various states that include California most likely indicates that as time goes on people feel more comfortable revealing to the hospital admittance staff or their physicians that they take a toke now and then. Only the idiots associated with NIDA grants appear concerned about it.

    • jean valjean says:

“…99.2 percent were secondary codes, meaning the person was primarily hospitalized for something other than marijuana.”
Really? What about the 0.8% who, according to the hospital, were hospitalized for “marijuana as a primary cause.” What exactly were the symptoms? Giggling too much perhaps?

    • thelbert says:

of course they figured out the addresses of all the pot vendors working out of their homes and cross referenced that in too. if we could make biogas out all the BS that NIDA generates we wouldn’t need any nuke plants.

Now — “What about the infants?”

GW Pharmaceuticals Receives FDA Fast Track and EMA Orphan Designations for Intravenous Cannabidiol in the Treatment of Neonatal Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy (NHIE)

    http://tinyurl.com/od32quf

“NHIE and Perinatal Asphyxia are forms of acute or sub-acute brain injury due to asphyxia caused during the birth process and resulting from deprivation of oxygen during birth (hypoxia). The incidence of these conditions is estimated to be approximately 12,000 to 24,000 cases per year in the United States and EU combined. Of these cases, 35% are expected to die in early life and 30% may suffer from permanent disability. The current standard of care for perinatal asphyxia patients is to induce whole-body hypothermia. This treatment is only available in specialized neonatal intensive care units and must be started within 6 hours of birth. Even if a patient is put into induced hypothermia there is still a significant rate of morbidity and mortality, with a meta-analysis of the available data revealing a 27% death rate. Among the patients who survive, 28% suffer from major neurodevelopment issues and 26% develop Cerebral Palsy.”

    • darkcycle says:

U.S. government already owns the patents to cannabiniods for use in neuroprotection and neurogenesis.
Oh. That would only mean they gave those rights up to GW, at a pittance. What do you think the chances would have been had, say, you, or me, or Pete had asked for the rights to use those patents? Me thinks rather than get the rights, we could have expected a visit from DEA.

      • Will says:

“U.S. government already owns the patents to cannabiniods for use in neuroprotection and neurogenesis.”

Yes, I thought about this after reading the press release.

        And I also thought about these things;

“The current standard of care for perinatal asphyxia patients is to induce whole-body hypothermia”.

What does this tell us? That will all the amazing advances in medical science and the myriad of pharmaceuticals available, the accepted standard of care is to lower the infant’s body temperature. That’s it. Of course, this is to hopefully stop any further brain damage from occurring, it does not heal what has already been damaged.

“Even if a patient is put into induced hypothermia there is still a significant rate of morbidity and mortality, with a meta-analysis of the available data revealing a 27% death rate. Among the patients who survive, 28% suffer from major neurodevelopment issues and 26% develop Cerebral Palsy.”

Again, inducing hypothermia is the one and only last ditch effort to minimize damage. Yet, even if the damage is halted and the infant survives, there remains significant chances of major neurodevelopment issues cropping up over time.

Then my mood darkens a little (actually a lot). How many parents have had children whose lives started out with perinatal asphyxia and were given the news that there was painfully little that could be done for their child? Sorry. Except…

        Except that now — in 2015! — a well known cannabinoid is suddenly being fast tracked by the FDA and granted EMA Orphan status as a possible treatment option to not only mitigate damage from perinatal asphyxia but also to possibly repair and heal. Part of GW Pharmaceutical’s press release is, it seems, intentionally vague;

“GW believes that cannabinoids may have a potentially important role in the treatment of high need pediatric neurologic conditions.” [emphasis added]

Fast fast tracking by the FDA is not handed out like candy. There has to be more to this story that mere “belief”. Back to that US patent awarded in 2003 perhaps?

Then I start thinking (again) of the names of those who’ve spent their lives demonizing the very notion that cannabis has any “medical” attributes — names such as Sabet, Volkow, Sembler, Walters, Tandy, Bensinger, Leonhart, Barthwell, Thurstone, DuPont — jeez, the list is quite long, I’ll stop taking up space listing them. All the lying and obstruction. Those f*cking people.

His prefrontal lobe was damaged leaving him with no impulse control, which caused his raising to be particularly difficult for my daughter and her ex. He has genius level intelligence and at the age of 15 he is finally learning to control his impulses consciously. They had him in brain entrainment for a number of years when he was in elementary school, didn’t help, they tried a whole lot of other ways to help him that also didn’t work, his parents had almost given up hope, when he began to change. His sister was the first to notice the change a few months ago, now we all can see it. But he (and we) never would have had to go through all that had cannabis treatment been available at his birth.

Oh well, it’s only been theirs for 4 years. I reiterate my opinion that 6630507 is commercially worthless and that the only reason that Kannalife licensed the patent is to give themselves a patina of legitimacy. It makes it much easier to sell overpriced, worthless stock to the gullible. For details see “a fool and his money.”

Don’t worry, except for the fact that I’d call it a conspiracy of interests, not an overt conspiracy, I have no doubt that the Federal government has smiled down at GW Pharm. I expect the FDA to approve Epidiolex about 30 seconds after the ink dries on the phase III trials, probably January of 2016. I’ve believed that since the first time I saw the brand name Epidiolex® Something gave the GW BoD the confidence to move the company (except the farm) to the United States. That’s no small feat and the company is directed by idiots without the confidence that things are going to happen in its favor. But if the Dravets’ babies hadn’t discovered that cannabidiol is an effective medicine none of this would be happening. But the pragmatic reality is that the Feds couldn’t and still can’t afford to let those children become the poster children of medicinal cannabis. (Shhh, the FDA/DEA is directed by idiots and this is just the desparation of people who “know” that they’ve lost but can’t admit it even to themselves.)

I don’t think that I’m ever going to be able to understand the way the DWR regulars appear to feel about GW. The pie is large enough for both sides to put themselves in a sugar induced coma but by and large both sides are hell bent not only winning but seeing the other side lose. Both sides appear to be willing to let sick people suffer more than is humanly possible to avoid in order to accomplish that end. That’s just bad joojoo.

Back in the late 1990s a permabull named Abby Cohen from Goldman Sachs would get trotted out on CNBC whenever the economy had a hiccup. She repetitively used the metaphor of an air craft carrier as the American economy saying you just can’t make a ship that size turn on a dime. Often she would be followed by a permabear named Bill Gross who reminded the audience that they said that the Titanic was unsinkable and that re-arranging the deck chairs is a waste of time.

But the point I’m trying to make is that her air craft carrier metaphor is spot on and applies to a lot more than just the economy. E.g. American (some) drugs policies and shared manias about those (some) drugs. It takes time, effort and planning to change the direction of something that large, especially when the ship’s captain is a blistering idiot.
        ————————————————–
Off on a tangent: Even more remarkable is it appears that they’re still dancing the same dance. Bill Gross Told Goldman’s Abby Cohen That Her Forecast Was ‘Farcical’ At Barron’s Roundtable The sad part is they’re both richer than god almighty. Smart people like them should know that bears make money, bulls make money, but pigs get slaughtered. Well maybe it’s what they think of as fun, I don’t know. But over 2 decades worth?

” On the eve of what appears to be a nationwide relaxation of marijuana laws, the state’s law enforcement community is vying for one last fix, and just like any junkie, it doesn’t care who gets hurt along the way.”

Been saying they’d do this for years. Prohib LE knows their days of legal smash-and-grab are drawing to a close, and they’re getting their last licks in, forgetting about the inevitable social, and therefore, legislative backlash. Fighting amongst themselves for the scraps, like vultures hissing and flapping at each other over a carcass, not caring how it looks to those who bought the meat. But only for so long, as that public backlash of disgust with Drugwar tactics is getting stronger.

Proof of that backlash is already evident, courtesy of reformers and their allies in Congress holding the hooves of once-sacred DrugWarrior cows to the fire. For the first time, the beef is being separated from the BS…and Congress is seeing what we knew all along: that there’s damn’ little meat left, and what’s left is contaminated.

But this won’t stop what’s happening; that will have to run its course. The wholly predictable – and predicted – barbaric actions of some LE in the waning days of prohibition will only hasten its end…and hasten the beginning of Congressional investigations into abuses of power committed by prohibition’s agents.

Old Klingon proverb: “Only a fool fights in a burning house!” Lotta fools in Prohiblandia: Prohibition’s house is now fully engulfed in a 4-alarm fire, but with Johnny Pee leading the bucket brigade, the prohibs within think they can put it out, if they can collect enough samples.

Sorry, Johnny, not one drop of anything not flammable. My sentiments WRT prohibition’s conflagration can best be expressed with lyrics from a song from last decade: “The house! The house! The house is on fire! We don’t need no water, let the MFer burn! Burn, MFer, burn!”

And let those who supported the societal cancer that is prohibition be immolated along with it.

A reckoning of their actions is due. Long past due.

All Cohen, Blumenauer, Gillibrand, Rand or Booker have to do to swat this pesky fly is to ask Kevvie or any SAMite under oath if Project SAM receives any taxpayer money. Let’s see Kevvie and Company do the ‘Slick Willie Shuffle’, and try to play word games when that happens.

What’s unintentianally revealing is when you read the syllabus; you can’t help but get a general sense of desperation wafting up from it. All of the actions proposed are feverishly defensive in both nature and tone.

From the get-go, it’s all about defense, about guerilla actions in lost territory (CO and WA), all about counter-attack.

But counter-attacking against what? What amounts to an entire generation’s zeigeist?

The prohibs lost the information ‘war for hearts and minds’ the first lie they told to a generation with access to alternate information sources. One that had reasons to be distrustful due to the way it was treated at school (lockdowns, searches, etc.) by the very same officials who unctuously told them it was all being done for their own good.

Re-legalization is that generation’s revenge against those who insulted their intelligence so callously for so long. An icicle would have a better chance existing on Hell’s roof than a prohib would swaying them, now. To ignore that, to continue to use methodologies already proven useless, is to add further insult to sentience.

The old anti-drug voodoo doesn’t work anymore. The old incantations and rituals no longer wow the crowds of former members of the congregation, as most of them are dead, and what’s left is either deaf or senile.

The young are gathering at the Church of Cognitive Liberty and are partaking of communion there; they refuse to wear the symbolic hoodwink and anti-drug manacles of the old faith. ONDCP found that out with their Billion-dollar flop of an ad campaign aimed straight at them.

But still the priests of the old faith gather to plot for a future that itself does not have any plans for them, save for assigning them the ignominy of historical obscurity.

Rejoice, reformers! Here’s proof the prohibs are operating rearguard fashion. And that’s the last place you want to be in the face of a hard-driving advancing opponent…like us. Pour it on, they’re breaking.

MMYV or Marijuana Makes You Violent also made it obvious they are a another branch of the ONDCP, this is where Pete Miller, Kyle Stevens and Josh Freeman made it obvious, they teamed up with groups like Project SAM, NO2POT, Parents Opposed To Pot and last but not least the Drug Free America Foundation aka Straight Inc, their satire operation is a front, i have heard of a rumor that Christine Tatum or Christian Thurstone is connected to one of them because they treated one of the MMYV leadership for alcohol problems and another one is Josh Freeman who lives in Florida has connections to Betty and Melvin Sembler and the Drug Free America Foundation

        • Will says:

          Mr_Alex, why are you leaving out one of the ringleaders for MMYV, Zach Rhoads? Below is an FB post of his clearly demonstrating that MMYV is “another branch of the ONDCP”;

“Ralliard wept for the welt of Cone Bazus. Chucking Chapman into the crumpled steeple before treatment for the feeble. A chosen modal for the graven page tempered and waged war upon Govy’s Chorus Shoar.”

See? Clear as day, has ONDCP written all over it. Also clear, this young man has never “sucked on a hemp stick”.

[Note: please be kind to Zach. Both of his parents were “slaughtered by marijuana maniacs”. Tragic to say the least. BTW, Pete Miller’s parents met the exact same fate. Coincidence? Think again.]

Also on MMYV’s website their statistics are flawed or even fraudulent, they blame every thing on Cannabis.

Kapt… I think this was why Botticelli was given the top job at ONDCP. His 25 years of smoozing the treatment industry and helping like-thinkers in AA to get set up in “not for profits” (which just happen to pay the directors well) are finally bearing fruit. It’s not so much What About the Chilluns now, but What About the Addicts… after all it’s for their own good, isn’t it? Don’t you just love these EX-addicts like Pat Kennedy and Botticelli wanting to continue caging non-problematic consumers because THEY have a drug-problem?

        • kaptinemo says:

Jean and friends, I saw this coming back in 1999, with Barry McCaffrey beginning the call for ‘treatment’, and, following in his predecessor’s footsteps, now works for the treatment industry.

And as for such as Kennedy, I can only share CS Lewis’s observation:

“Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron’s cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience. They may be more likely to go to Heaven yet at the same time likelier to make a Hell of earth. This very kindness stings with intolerable insult. To be “cured” against one’s will and cured of states which we may not regard as disease is to be put on a level of those who have not yet reached the age of reason or those who never will; to be classed with infants, imbeciles, and domestic animals.” (Emphasis mine – k.)

That’s how they see us. And if an animal won’t come to heel, in their eyes there is nothing wrong in killing it. As the Memorial Page shows, they’ve done plenty of that. Never forget that eugenics powered the early drug laws, as well as the attendant Social Darwinism used to justify old racial bigotries. Addicts were ‘diseased’, like chemical Typhoid Marys, or worse, vampires. All of this has been forgotten save by scholars and/or reformers.

Ideologically, it’s like the vast, modern DrugWar apparatus has at its heart a decrepit old barn where horses walk a treadmill powering an old DC car generator that drives the state-of-the-art machinery. But that anachronism is what runs it all.

The classic, all-time stupid anti-drug commercial featured a woman frying an egg in a skillet just before she swings the frying pan and trashes her entire kitchen with it, all the while exclaiming, “This is your brain on drugs!”

Well, it turns out the frying pan analogy was a bit closer to reality than drug propagandists suspected. Research at the University of Montreal indicates the “high-fat” content of the eggs “can cause impairments in the critical motivation brain pathway”. From the news release, “This is your brain on fried eggs ”:

July 14, 2015 — High-fat feeding can cause impairments in the functioning of the mesolimbic dopamine system…This system is a critical brain pathway controlling motivation.[…]

“Our research shows that independent of weight gain and obesity, high-fat feeding can cause impairments in the functioning of the brain circuitry profoundly implicated in mood disorders, drug addiction, and overeating – several states and pathologies that impinge on motivation and hedonia,”… “Another key finding is that the effects of prolonged high-fat feeding to dampen the sensitivity of this brain reward system are specific to saturated fats – palm oil used in this study – but not monounsaturated fat such as the olive oil used in this study.” […]

Fulton’s study is the first of its kind to show that, regardless of weight changes, unrestrained intake of saturated fats can have negative effects on the controls of motivation by the brain. “As we were able to control for changes in body weight, hormones and glucose levels, we think that the fats may be affecting the dopamine system by a direct action in the brain,” Fulton said. “We in fact have separate evidence that brain inflammation could be involved in this process, as it is evoked by saturated high-fat feeding, which will be presented in a future publication.”

There you have it. Marijuana is healthier for people than fried eggs.

Scientific research has found that less than 1 in 10 people who use cannabis across their lifetime will progress to cannabis
dependence, meaning that more than 90% do not become addicted (Anthony
et al., 1994). The lifetime probability of becoming heroin-dependent, meanwhile, has been estimated at 23.1% (Anthony et al., 1994).
Interestingly, the addictive potential of cannabis is also significantly lower than other illegal drugs, as 20.9% of lifetime cocaine users, 22.7% of lifetime alcohol users, and 67.5% of lifetime nicotine users are estimated to become dependent
    (Lopez-Quintero et al., 2011). “” ‘snip’

A claim which is neatly torn to shreds:

” If cannabis use caused schizophrenia, we would expect to see increases in incidence as rates of cannabis use have increased, but this trend has not been observed (Hall, 2014). One UK-based study reported that, given that cannabis use has increased fourfold among the UK population between the early 1970s and 2002, there should be a corresponding 29% increase in cases of schizophrenia among men, and 12% increase among women between 1990 and 2010 (Hickman et al., 2007). Instead, during this time period (1996-2005), it was found that annual cases of schizophrenia in the UK were either stable or declining (Frisher et al., 2009). These findings strongly suggest that cannabis use does not cause schizophrenia

It’s the equivalent of confessing: ‘We Coloradans just had the two worst heinous crimes in our State history- possibly as a result of mind altering, psychoactive marijuana. Yet we decided to legalize marijuana anyway and probably did just about the stupidest thing in the history of the world.
